De László also painted the sitter's two brothers, Oliver in military uniform in 1917 [1968] and Angus in 1926 [5237], as well as the sitter’s son Alexander in 1935 [10281]. He also painted his cousin Antony Vickers in 1928 [7551].
Sholto Douglas Vickers was born 14 July 1902, the son of Douglas Vickers (1861-1937) and his wife, Katherine Chetwynd (1862-1944). He married 1 July 1929, Princess Olga Galitzine, eldest daughter of Prince and Princess Alexander Galitzine, at the Russian Church in Santa Barbara, California. They had one son, Alexander.
He travelled regularly to Canada and America in his twenties and thirties. In-coming and out-going passenger lists give his address as Chapel House Berkeley Square, though no profession is ever listed.
Vicker’s marriage ended in 1933 on the grounds of his wife’s adultery and he was granted custody of their son.
Sholto Vickers died 11 December 1939 at Pyla Plage, Gironde, France.
