Be sure to take accurate notes from the Power Point on Unit 1 Abstract Art  and POP Art during class.  Be able to identify the work of Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollack, and Andy Warhol.  

PROJECT  DESCRIPTION
All students will be creating their own personal abstract art piece based on Pop Culture, a book they are currently reading or have read, or images from a film past or present

What book, film, or POP Culture images do you want to base your project on?

WRITTEN PREPARATORY WORK

Write Down In your Notebook:

  1. Your top 3 books that you’ve read
  2. Your Top 5 Films/ Movies/ Shows
  3. 5 Pop Culture ideas/Images from present day

Now share these with your group

  1. What book, film, or POP Culture images do you want to base your project on?  (look at your list, choose 1 or 2)
  2. What are some images/ visuals associated with your topic.  Write down 5 or more
  3. Describe the artwork that you want to create in your notebook.  (5 sentences minimum)

Read your description to the person sitting next to you

HOMEWORK

Bring at least three printed visuals to draw from .  This could be some of the images/visuals listed above.  Be sure the images that you print are images that you want to include in your project and match your project description.  You will be observing these images carefully and spending significant time sketching them.  

If you do not have a printer, use a printer in the school, your local library, or your are welcome to use my printer after school  (please not during class)

PART 1 (100 points) Sketching the Outline

Using your visuals brought in from home, brainstorm how you want to layout the composition of your drawing.  Second, start sketching your visuals carefully.  Use the sketching techniques demonstrated in class.  Here are the following techniques:

  1. Create Margins (Ruler Width)
  2. Use your homework visuals, observing them carefully to fill up the space of the paper
  3. Use sketch pressure
  4. Erase as much as you draw
  5. Use rulers and compasses
  6. Use your studio time wisely
  7. Overlap various shapes and lines to abstract the imagery

PART 2 (100 points)  Coloring Your Project

  1. The majority of the shapes must include gradation with strong value.  Look at the shadows in your visuals to create the dark values, look at the light to create the light values
  2. Be mindful of the mood that different colors and color combinations create
  3. Must include example of stippling
  4. Must include example of cross-hatching
  5. All shapes must follow the 1/3 rule (1/3 dark, 1/3 medium, 1/3 light)

PART 3 (20 points) Responding to Your Work

Choose one prompt to write a minimum of 1 page in your notebook.  If you’d like to choose more than one prompt to write about, you may do so.  

Describe step by step in your own words, the process of the artwork you created.  Include any pre-project activities

Describe in detail, the techniques you learned during this project and why you were comfortable or uncomfortable with these techniques.

Describe in detail the challenges you faced while creating and how you overcame these challenges.

Describe what you would do differently if you were to do this project again.

Write about an artist that relates to this project.  Describe the ways by which the artist relates to the project.

Describe how the artwork is connected to the way you feel or to your life in anyway.
