Aleu’s Guide to Easy Leveling

  1. General Notes:

  • Spell acquisition is independent of class level. You can learn any overworld ability at level 1 so long as you have access to the mob. Abilities within duties require the duty level minimum, obviously.
  • YOU DO NOT NEED TO GET HIT BY AN ABILITY TO LEARN IT!
  • If one member of the party learns an ability, all members will, provided that they are within the immediate area and alive. If you are dead when the enemy dies, you WILL NOT learn the skill even if the rest of the party does.  not that I speak from experience or anything oh noo not at all
  • If a mob dies before they cast the ability, it does not count. Watch your shit.
  • The number of times an ability is cast does not affect whether or not it is learned.
  • The higher a spell is ranked, the lower the odds of learning it. Rank is indicated by the number of stars under it in your spellbook in game.
  • Commencing a duty synced guarantees you will learn the ability so long as the enemy casts the spell and you are alive when it dies. Unsynced, the odds depend on the ability’s rank. To each their own. The exceptions to this are spells which are required for quest progression, which have a 100% learn rate even if unsynced.
  • If you queue for any duty and then leave, it will get rid of the stupid Brush With Death debuff so you can self-destruct again and again >:3
  • When it comes to general mob abilities, if it can be performed by the mob, it can be learned from the mob, regardless of level and/or location. For example: all Toads can perform Sticky Tongue. It’s up to you whether you choose to take on a level 17 or a 47.
  • Abilities which come from the special Blue Mobs (see section below) cannot be learned by ordinary overworld mobs.
  • Certain FATE targets can and do do abilities which BLUs can learn but, so far, no spells are exclusive to FATEs. Inb4 one in the next batch is
  • Listen. My guys. My gals. My nonbinary pals. Yeah. You can learn Glower from the Coerthas FATE: “The Eyes Have It.” You can learn the Chimera spells in Northern Thanalan at the Gorgimera FATE. However, seeing as these are both super bosses that require a full party or more to beat, I have one question: why the fuck would you?

Spell List

This is not a comprehensive list of spell locations. The locations listed here correspond to those within the Blue Mage Spellbook in game and easy alternatives if any exist for a particular ability. This does not mean you cannot potentially learn an ability somewhere else, but my goal is to make the acquisition process easy for those of you who just want to get on with it.

** next to a mob indicates that mobs of a similar type and caliber in various locations have been confirmed to teach this spell. For example, I list the Treant Saplings in North Shroud as the ones that teach Acorn Bomb, as this is the mob specifically referenced in the Blue Mage Spellbook. However, the Treant Saplings in Central Shroud work as well.

🗡 next to a mob indicates it is an Elite Mark. Maps of spawn locations for these marks can be found online.

Certain mobs have been notated with a superscripted number beside them. You will find further information about dealing with them below the charts.

Notes:

  1. The Glide Bomb will not Self-Destruct until it’s at low health and enough time has passed. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DIE TO LEARN IT JUST TRIGGER IT THEN RUN FOOL RUN!!!!!
  1. The Manor Sentry appears just before the final boss and does perform the Petrify ability. However, since you must kill a mob to learn its ability, you cannot obtain it from this specific mob. You must wait for him to spawn in the final boss and get him to 20%, at which point he will begin casting Level-5 Petrify amongst other abilities.
  • If synced, I recommend using your Water Cannon to whittle down his HP. It’s time consuming, but 1000 Needles will cut it VERY close.
  • Should the Sentry die before it can cast Petrify, immediately use Self-Destruct or allow the boss to kill you. The boss encounter resets and you need not repeat the whole dungeon!! Do this as well if the Sentry dies but doesn’t give the ability.
  1. Any Chimera mob can teach you Dragon/Ram’s Voice, but the easiest way, hands down, is The Chimera trial from the original relic questline. If you don’t have it unlocked, I highly suggest doing so, as the 10-15 minutes it takes to progress far enough to unlock the trial are far less painful than running freaking Cutter’s Cry again and again—because, even unsynced, that shit’s long.
  2. Baalzephon appears in the undercity after the second boss. Aggro him, continuously flee from him, and eventually he will Loom over to you. There is no cast bar, it’s simply a teleport. (Though not necessary, destroying the White Magestones may help get him to Loom sooner. If nothing else, taking them out ensures he won’t regenerate.)
  3. Glass Dance only occurs during Phase 3 while Shiva is in Bow Stance.
  4. Two level 50 dungeons, Pharos Sirius and The Lost City of Amdapor, are veritable hotspots for spells. Though all the spells found in them can be obtained from other (perhaps easier) methods, I chose to leave each dungeon on both lists since you could feasibly obtain all seven spells all in a single synced run of each dungeon.
  • Amdapor: Loom (Level 1-49 Spells) + Exuviation, Devour, Eerie Soundwave (Level 50-80 Spells)
  • Pharos: Sonic Boom (Level 50-80 Spells) + Flying Frenzy & Song of Torment (Level 1-49 Spells)

  1. Level 60 (50-80)

This batch of spells is more focused on trials and dungeons specifically. While some are obtainable in the overworld, the number of spells obtainable from ‘pretty much any type of X mob’ have decreased exponentially.

  1. Notes:
  1. Pom Cure is easiest to obtain in Thornmarch Extreme. Due to the nature of the fight, each run gives you three chances to learn the spell from her as she can die up to three times if you’re careful. As long as she’s given the chance to cast Pom Cure each time she’s alive, each time you kill her is a chance to learn it. The only way to get her to cast Pom Cure is to damage one of her allies – but don’t kill them or you’ll lose one of your chances to kill her.
  2. Alexandrian Hider and Alexandrian Slider are adds which spawn BEFORE the boss fight!! Seriously just go in, fight trash, and dip.
  3. Page 64 will not cast Level 5 Death unless only one member of the party is visible. Position yourself a short distance (approx 10 malms) away while the others hide around a nearby corner to trigger it.
  4. Sabotender Guardia is one of multiple adds which spawn during this fight. If unsynced, you must keep her alive long enough to spawn him during her final ‘phase’.
  5. While most abilities on this list can be obtained solo if you’re lucky enough, the Decaying Gourmand fight in Lost City requires you to have at least one other person with you to free you after he Devours you. (*Attack on Titan theme blares in the distance*)
  6. Corruption is the generic name shared by mobs before and during the first boss. However, the ability can only be learned during the boss fight. Party members who become tethered must take the tether to one of the unmarked birds or spiders on the edge of the arena. Once the tether is passed, the mob will cast Aetherial Mimicry. Kill the add which spawns. This can be done numerous times throughout the fight until the ability is learned so long as you keep the boss alive.

  1. Level 70 (81-104)

This batch, like the one before, focuses a lot more on instanced encounters rather than field mobs. However, we once again have seen the addition of new Blue Mobs to facilitate the acquisition of some of these spells!

**I will update this guide as necessary if any of these spells are found in other more convenient locations. If you believe you’ve found another location for any of these spells, please submit it using our google form found here: https://forms.gle/HA5FjRzeCmqi5AfT6

  1. Notes:
  1. Fuck Mist Dragon okay. He sucks on a normal day. Anyway the only way you can get him to actually cast Cold Fog is to NOT kill the dragon head adds. You must leave them alive and Diamondback through the cast.
  2. Unlike other Blue Mobs, there are actually three groups of Courser Chocobos milling about south of Tailfeather. They’re all the same though, so go wherever.
  3. Phantom Flurry is a tankbuster followed by a massive cleave in the direction Suzaku is facing. Make sure you’re firmly behind her once it ends or you’re gonna get mcyeeted into the void lmao.

Blue Mobs

“Blue Mobs” refers to mobs added to the game specifically to provide easy overworld access to spells which otherwise could only be obtained in duties or via specific leve targets. Generally speaking, these mobs are the easiest way to obtain their respective abilities.

These mobs share specific characteristics which make them easily identifiable and distinguishable from their ordinary counterparts who can be found nearby:

  1. Bigger
  2. Higher level
  3. They come in threes
  4. Different/specific name
  5. They will respawn exactly 30 seconds after death

I’ve included images of these mobs below. For reference purposes, the mobs were photographed beside a miqo’te female at max height.

  • Not to be mistaken for the Vanguard H-1s from MSQ and Meridianum. Unknown if H-1s can perform Drill Cannon.

Aleu’s Guide to Easy Leveling

It’s never too late to join the Blue Partay! Follow this guide and you’ll be capped in no time.

Now, you might be wondering how that’s possible. You can’t go into normal duty finder, you can’t go into Deep Dungeons, and there are no weapon upgrades available until level 50!! With all that in mind, 60 or even 70 levels can seem quite daunting.

But do I have good news for you!

(Pictured: Anan’zi Chalahko)

Fact: the higher level a mob, the more exp you earn from the kill.

Fact: the amount of exp a Blue Mage earns per kill is not affected by their level.

Conclusion: killing high level mobs will earn you buttloads of exp quickly!

What you’ll need:

  1. A buddy
  2. Flying Sardine
  3. EXP Boosters (Optional)
  4. Training grounds

...and in that order!

1. The Buddy

Since you’ll be targeting mobs of a significantly higher level than you, you need someone to do the actual killing. Y’know. Before the mobs eat you.

Ideally they’ll be someone who’s level 80 and has at least one physical class decked out enough to kill up to level 69 mobs in two hits or less. Casting classes are also viable, but this method, when done efficiently, involves moving quickly through an area and often attacking on the fly. While mages do have instacasts, most will not be potent enough to get the job done before you die.

Shit happens, though, especially while you’re getting used to your routes, so make sure they’ve got a class with rez on hand as well.

Once you’ve got them on board, head to Costa del Sol!

2. Flying Sardine

Flying Sardine is learned from the Apkallu in Bloodshore, just south of Costa around 30, 35.

Once you’ve found them, this is where your buddy’s job begins. Make sure you’re in a party with them!!!! If they have a tank, Provoke will work to aggro one of the Apkallu and others in the vicinity will follow. Otherwise, just auto attack one of them and let the rest swarm. Let them pelt your buddy with fish for about ten seconds before killing them to ensure that each one of them has ample opportunity to cast Flying Sardine at least once. Repeat until you acquire the skill!

…Just make sure they’re the one’s provoking the Apkallu and not you or. Y’know.

Rip.

3. EXP Boosters (Optional)

I say optional, but come on. Literally anything you have available to you that boosts exp should be utilized any time you’re levelling anything ever.

  • Heat of Battle II (FC Buff)
  • Food
  • Squadron Battle Manual (15% exp boost, obtained from priority squadron missions)

Keep your buffs up the entire time!

4. Training Grounds

Now that you’ve got what you need, it’s time to choose your arena. I recommend starting in an ARR area until you get yourself up to level 40, as that’s when the levels start taking longer to clear. You don’t have to, of course, but I personally prefer to since it reduces the odds of anyone getting accidentally one-shot.

It’s up to you where you go, but the best places will have a high concentration of high level (example: 48-49 in ARR) mobs and an easy path to follow.

  • Abandoned Amajina Mythril Mine in Northern Thanalan (pictured)
  • Natalan in Coerthas Central Highlands
  • Zahar'ak in Southern Thanalan
  • The Sylphlands in East Shroud

Other beast tribe strongholds work just as well! The strongholds also have the added advantage of being large enough to support multiple groups trying to level at once. Natalan, for example, can easily be shared by three different Blue Mages if you keep to your own areas. You only need to go as far as it takes for the mobs at the start of your route to respawn, which takes about 2 minutes from time of death. Just be sure to avoid any FATE targets in the area as much as you can as your escort won’t be able to one-shot those targets for you.

Place Flying Sardine somewhere on your hotbar that you can easily spam while running. I’d also suggest familiarizing yourself with the path you’re going to be taking from the safety of the air or on a higher class first.

DISBAND YOUR PARTY! This WILL NOT work if you are in a party with your buddy!!! The presence of a party member with a significantly higher level than you completely eliminates exp acquisition.

Once you’re ready, make your way along the path with your buddy. I’d suggest letting them lead and choose the targets. This reduces the chance of you pulling aggro early and will ensure they’re prepared to kill the mob before it can kill you. Watch who they’re running towards and target that mob.

Keep as far away from the enemies you intend to attack as possible!! If you slap a melee across the face with a fish, you’re gonna take a spear to the gut. But at a distance, in the few seconds it takes for a melee to reach you, your buddy will have killed it. Hopefully. They’ll have to be a bit quicker on the draw for casters but, fortunately, cast times exist.

When you have to deal with clusters of mobs, prioritize. If you have to choose between hitting/killing a ranged and a melee, go for the ranged first. Just as I said before: the melee has to run to you. In the time it takes for them to reach you, you can tag them and your buddy can kill them.

Worst case scenario, you take a hit, which is why I suggest starting in an ARR zone.

Heavensward and Stormblood:

In the Dravanian Hinterlands, there’s a whole stretch of mobs on top of the cliffs at 11, 33. If you run east from there, you can kill everything as far as the ruins of a house around 17, 24. Circle back, hitting the mobs on the detached landmass just to the north, and the beginning of the route will have respawned by the time you arrive. This was where I powered myself and others to level 60. Azys Lla works, too, but also screw Azys Lla.

As of patch 5.4, we can officially begin using Stormblood areas to level Blue Mage, too.

Confirmed on September 20th, 2021: Shadowbringers mobs will work for levelling purposes, but only the level 70 ones. Anything 71+ will not work.

I suggest:

  • Djanan Qhat (The Fringes 34, 19)
  • The east side of Secula Imperatoris and the Ironroad (The Peaks 23, 23)
  • The Song of Kings and Bloodhowe (The Lochs 17, 8)
  • The Loch Seld, east of the Ala Mhigan Quarter (The Lochs 24, 30)

If you want to level using Shadowbringers areas, I suggest:

  • The Fields of Amber, around Mord Souq (Ahm Araeng 29, 14)
  • The flat area northeast of Stilltide (Kholusia 38, 25)

Aaannnnd that’s it!

Just keep at it and you’ll be capped in a few hours! See ya out there!

Bonus for those of you who made it this far, aka the cutest BLU glam I’ve ever seen

Pii….kaaaa…..

CHUUUUUUUUU!!!!!
