Thriller Poster Analysis

The film, Shutter Island is a thriller, similar to our film. A black background is used for the top half of the poster.  This is used to represent the dark, eerie atmosphere that a thriller film should represent.

The use of the characters face introduces the character to the audience immediately therefore when they watch the film they can identify with them. The fear on the characters face also represent the fear and mystery that appears in the film.  

The bottom half of the poster is an image from the film. This gives the audience a sense of what they can expect in the film. The contrast in colours of the bottom and top half of the pages can connote confusion which is one of the features of a thriller.

The offshore island highlights loneliness. This represents an unstable condition of mental health which fits with the “psychological thriller” theme. Loneliness also represents danger which will instill fear into the audience. Using the quote “Some places never let you go”. This gives the audience an idea of what the storyline may entail. This will get the audience thinking and entice them into wanting to watch the film.

The poster also gives additional information such as release date (“February 19”) and cast members. For example, Leonardo Di Caprio is a popular, well-known actor which will give the film a respected and professional image which makes the audience more likely to watch it.
