EL 3 students function at various high beginner levels of English proficiency and literacy in their own language. EL 3 is based on state English and WIDA standards and competencies in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This course enables the limited English speaker to continue to increase and refine communication skills. EL 3 students read a variety of shortened texts for various purposes with an increasing level of comprehension. They write in a variety of forms, with increasing accuracy, to address specific purposes and audiences in language arts and all content areas. Examples may include extended sentence and paragraph writing from personal experiences and beginning connections to adaptive literature. EL 3 may be taken concurrently with other EL courses. Students are placed in this course based on the successful completion of EL 1 and EL 2, the Home Language Survey, WAPT and ACCESS scores, parental approval, and other factors.
