What is a Chromebook?
A Chromebook is a personal computer running the Google Chrome OS (Operating System). Although this device has offline capabilities, it is designed to be used while connected to the Internet. Rather than use traditional software that resides on the device itself, Chromebooks utilize web applications and cloud storage to create a unique user experience. The web applications allow the device to quickly boot upon system startup. In addition to utilizing cloud‐storage, Chromebooks have an internal hard drive where documents can be saved. USB peripheral devices such as a wireless mouse or a flash drive will work; however, students will not be able to install software or run executable files.
Who will get a Chromebook?
Walnut High School students who need a device for school assignments. A Chromebook will be assigned directly to the students and will travel home with them at night. Students may choose to opt out of the program and bring their own device to school.
Is there a fee for the Chromebook?
There is no fee for use of the Chromebook.
Does my child get to keep the Chromebook?
No. Students will return the Chromebook upon leaving the school district. Students are expected to take care of the Chromebook to avoid any damages or repairs.
How can my student clean and care for the Chromebook?
Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth; lint-free cloth; or screen wipes listed for safe use on electronic device screens to clean the Chromebook screens. Never lift the Chromebooks by the screen or carry them with the screen open. Make sure there is nothing on the keyboard before closing the lid.
How is Walnut Valley Unified protecting my student’s privacy while online?
Arcadia Unified School District follows all Federal and State laws and guidelines for protecting student information (CIPA, FERPA, COPPA).
How does my student stay safe online?
Internet traffic is routed through the WVUSD content filter on district Chromebooks both at school and at home. We also support staff with tools and strategies to monitor student use of technology in the classroom. While internet use is filtered, no filter is 100%, and WVUSD strongly recommends that parents also monitor student activity for appropriate use.
Are Chromebooks and Google Apps for Education secure for my student?

What information will the parents be provided about the Chromebooks?
There will be a Student/Parent Chromebook agreement that will provide students and parents detailed information about the Chromebooks.
Is my student expected to bring their Chromebook to school each day?
Yes, the Chromebook is an instructional tool like a pencil or notebook. They should bring the device fully charged each day of the school year unless specifically asked to leave the device home.
What if my student’s device is broken, lost, or stolen? Who is responsible?
If a student has a problem with a device there will be a location at each site that students can drop off Chromebooks for a repair.
Will students be able to print from their Chromebooks on campus?
No. Printing on campus from Chromebooks is not supported.
Will students be able to download programs/apps to their chromebooks, either for personal or for school purposes?
Students will be able to download free apps from the Chrome Web Store for both personal and school purposes. We will also be able to push apps out that are needed by all students.
How will infrastructure be upgraded at school sites to ensure acceptable bandwidth for all of the Chromebooks?
We are currently adding new access points to all classrooms that do not currently have one installed. We are also upgrading the oldest access points to the newest technology. We will continue to monitor and make adjustments to ensure the best quality connection possible. We will continue to upgrade existing infrastructure as needed.
What type of activities will the chromebook be used for?
Activities included are those that enhance instruction and learning opportunities. Communication, Internet resources, research, writing, and collaboration are just a few examples.
