TU4 Patch - Gogma Balls edition

New Endgame Meta Builds

Ideal Gogma Artian Reinforcements

New Weapons

  • Patch introduces Gogma Artian weapon system. Those are new BiS for almost all matchups. Pierce Coating got a massive buff so we are not limited to only Close Range Coating bows. Power Coating bows, despite buff - are even worse than pre patch.

New Armor Set + Gogmapocalypse

  • Gogmazios Armor added. Not only adds an insane amount of elemental damage, but comfort on top of it.

New Matchups 

  • Because we can craft Gogma Artian weapons of any coating and element, the bow doesn’t need to settle on secondary elemental weakness for some matchups anymore.

Summary of Patch Notes Changes

  • Shortened coating reload animation.
  • Tracer Arrow can be now buffered mid Discerning Dodge. (no need for delayed input)
  • Power Coating raw modifier buffed: x1.3->x1.35
  • Arcshot 3 falling arrows: 11mv->12mv

Summary of Patch Notes Changes

  • Dragon Piercer’s damage per tick falls off much quicker now compared to before.
  • Power Volley’s elemental multipliers increased by 0.1 (0.35/0.55/0.65 to 0.45/0.65/0.75)
  • Power Shot and Power Volley are now affected by Charge Master
  • Thousand Dragons: MV 18 -> 23
  • Tracer Thousand Dragons MV 21 -> 26

New Bows

  • Mizu bow sucks because of pierce coatings.
  • Zoh Shia bow is not as good as G. Arkveld bow. The difference is small so if you prefer the Zoh Shia bow for some reason or another, feel free to use it.

How to Play?

Important Information

  • Please go to the training area and read the tooltips in the upper right hand corner of your screen if you have not done so.
  • Keybinds video by Tidus69
  • The goal is to reach the highest charge level as fast as possible, maintain the highest charge level as long as possible, and output power shots and power volleys as much as possible.
  • Always have coatings loaded at all times.
  • Quick shots, power shots, and power volleys don't grant charge level.
  • Perfect discerning dodge grants max charge, 100 stamina, and one bar (30 points) of trickshot gauge.
  • The final portion of the animation for discerning dodge only has hyper armor, which means it is possible to take chip damage or faint even after successfully dodging an attack.
  • Arrows while a tracer is applied are locked at a specific charge level.

Neutral Openers

Use these if you are forced to reset your combo, regenerate stamina, apply coating, or apply tracer.

  • Charged shot > Charged shot > Power shot > Power volley
  • Hold charge until yellow > Charged shot > Power shot > Power volley
  • Discerning dodge > Charged shot > Power shot > Power volley
  • Hold charge > Charging sidestep > Charged shot > Power shot > Power volley
  • Hold charge > Apply coating > Charged shot > Power shot > Power volley
  • Hold charge > Apply tracer > Power shot > Power volley
  • Hold charge > Apply coating > Apply tracer > Power shot > Power volley

Due to the long animation lock of the power volley, only commit to it if you know the opening is big enough.

Charge Shortcut

For some reason, charging shots is quicker when stationary. This is useful for neutral openers as well as replicating the dash dancing sequence without actually needing to spend stamina on charging sidestep.

Note that this is still weaker than actual dash dancing.

Dash Dancing

The bread and butter combo of bow. It must be started with any variation of the neutral opener.

  • Charging sidestep  > Charged shot > Power shot > Power volley > Repeat

If the opening is not big enough, it is fine to skip the power volley.

  • Charging sidestep  > Charged shot > Power shot > Repeat

Animation Cancel

Input buffering is done by pressing the button for charged shot then power shot in very quick succession.

Extremely important to practice this since it is a big dps boost and you will be using this after every charging sidestep while dash dancing.

During dash dance:

After discerning dodge:

Free Trickshot Gauge

Holding the charged shot button during the charging sidestep animation will give you a bit of trickshot gauge.

While animation cancelling during dash dance, Method 1 will give less trickshot gauge compared to Method 2.

  • +2 coating gauge after dash dancing using 10 coatings.
  • +5 coating gauge after dash dancing using 10 coatings.

Swallow Shot

If you dropped max charge, it can be used to chase a monster after a topple.

  • Hold charge > Charging sidestep > Swallow shot > Charging shot > Power shot > Power Volley > Dash dance

Can be used to reposition yourself while dash dancing.

  • Charging sidestep  > Swallow shot > Power shot > Power volley > Dash dance

Swallow shot can also be done after using discerning dodge.

  • Discerning dodge > Swallow shot > Power shot > Power volley > Dash dance

Tracer

Primary use is for monsters with weird or hard to hit weak spots. For example, Xu Wu head or Gore Magala feelers.

  • Hold charge > Apply tracer > Power shot > Power volley > Dash dance
  • Hold charge > Apply coating > Apply tracer > Power shot > Power volley > Dash dance

Another use case is for situations where you are not able to use discerning dodge to regenerate stamina ie. during chaotic multiplayer hunts.

Assuming constitution 5 and stamina surge 3 is equipped, we can just repeatedly use the power shot button in order to regain stamina while outputting damage .

  • Quick shot > Power shot > Power volley > Repeat

Dragon Piercer/Instant Dragon Piercer

To use instant dragon piercer, input dragon piercer button after any weapon action except load coating and thousand dragons. This move is faster than a regular dragon piercer but also weaker.

For a dragon piercer build, it is recommended to mix in neutral openers and dash dancing while only using dragon piercer if the opening is big enough.

  • Neutral opener > Instant dragon piercer > Dragon piercer
  • Neutral opener > Dash dance > Instant dragon piercer > Dragon piercer

If you are in multiplayer, it is possible to just spam dragon piercer and instant dragon piercer since the aggro will be split among everyone.

  • Charging sidestep > Instant dragon piercer > Dragon piercer
  • Charging sidestep > Instant dragon piercer > Repeat

Focus Strike

When a wound appears, use focus strike and the follow up automatic dragon piercer to stagger a monster. This allows you to create your own opening and continue dash dancing or use a regular dragon piercer.

It is recommended to quickly release after locking in on one pip out of three for one wound in order to maximize speed and the amount of staggers.

  • Focus strike > Auto dragon piercer > Neutral opener > Dash dance
  • Focus strike > Auto dragon piercer > Dragon piercer

Tracer

Niche use case if you have trouble focusing on a weak point.

For example, Gore Magala feelers or Xu Wu head.

Also useful for situations where you are stuck with poverty builds such as arena challenges. Can be used to combo with thousand dragons in order to deal relatively high burst damage without relying on proper builds.

Thousand Dragons

Niche use case for maximizing damage on wounds. Use thousand dragons when a wound is about to get destroyed to squeeze out as much valuable as possible.

Also useful for situations where you are stuck with poverty builds such as arena challenges. Can be used to combo with tracer in order to deal relatively high burst damage without relying on proper builds.

Make sure to cancel end lag animation using a charging sidestep or focus strike.

Arc Shot

Niche uses cases for monsters with mechanics tied to destroying wounds.

For example, the Zoh Shia fight gives arc shot an actual viable use case since it helps quickly create and destroy wounds on his wings for a topple.


Progression

Bow progression in Wilds is not as atrocious compared to previous titles due to the existence of discerning dodge, yet the weapon is still heavily reliant on stamina skills, consumables, and food.

Gear acquisition during the majority of progression is not aimed at min-maxing since it is a waste of time. Therefore, the pieces that will be suggested are relatively easy to get during the story while still providing relevant skills.

Craft and upgrade the Hunter’s Bow whenever possible.

It is highly recommended to utilize your low-rank armor spheres to improve your overall survivability throughout the story progression. The values of these armor spheres decrease over-time, so it's best to use them sooner than save them for later.

Early High Rank

HR 8: Yian Kut-Ku unlocks in Chapter 4: New Ecosystems and is easily farmable with the Kut-Ku Gone Cuckoo event quest.

HR 10: Gypceros can be found in the wild or just SOS.

Mid High Rank

HR 9: Doshaguma Braces α

HR 21: Guardian Rathalos Mail β, Guardian Rathalos Coil α, Guardian Rathalos Greaves β, Fitness Charm III

Craft and upgrade the G. Doshaguma bow whenever possible.


Endgame

Matchups

Because we can now craft any Gogma Artian weapon of any type, matchups are normalized. No more settling for secondary elemental weaknesses.

Gogma Artian Bows

Title Update 4 introduced a new weapon upgrade system for Artian - Gogma. These weapons are currently the best in slot for all matchups.
Depending on the
Artian Focus selected during upgrading, the player can influence the type of coating the bow has:

Since Affinity Focus stats are so low compared to the rest of the coatings, this negates the 5% buff to raw it received in this patch. As a result, Power Coating is even worse than it was before the patch. 

It is important to note that we can roll a maximum of two EX boosts of a given type.

When it comes to rolling for set/group bonuses, it is worth knowing that each elemental type of Gogma Artian bows share a common seed. We can take advantage of this by using Tarred Device Affinity Focus to progress the seed forward using save scumming. Affinity Focus Devices are worthless anyways:

  • To do this, we craft target elemental Gogma Artian bow and roll until we get the desired result (using the same type of Tarred Device as the Artian Bow doubles its value when rerolling).
  • If we find the set/group bonus we are looking for, we remember how many rolls we have made and we exit the menu without saving.
  • We repeat this step, performing -1 roll at the end.
  • We perform the final roll on the target weapon that is to receive the desired skill.

Ideal Gogma Artian Reinforcements

That should be your goal to aim for when reinforcing Gogma Bow.
Affinity roll is by far the weakest of three so we tend to ignore it.
3raw and 2ele reinforcements
 assure that if you get a 4ex roll , you are set with a perfect (statwise) weapon.
As for set/group bonus: it depends on build you are aiming for - target set/group bonus will be highlighted in build section.


Alternative Bows

Dedicated to those who are looking for alternative bows that are not restricted to being Artian and/or close-range coating. These bows are weaker than the meta, but are easier and faster to get.

Ideal Artian Bow

The Artian crafting system allows for the customization of eight total stats. Three stats come from the parts (infusions), which could be affinity or attack. Five stats come from upgrading (reinforcements), which could be affinity, attack, or element. You will need to use parts of the same element/status if you want the highest value.

The ideal stat spread for Artian bows is a pure investment on attack. Three attack infusions and five attack reinforcements.

Since acquiring this type of weapon roll can be seen as unrealistic and time consuming due to needing multiple bows, any deviation on reinforcements is weaker but perfectly acceptable since the difference is extremely marginal. Your chances for 5 attack reinforcements can be seen below.

Weapon Skills

Dash Dancing Focused

Learn how Bandolier/Tetrad Shot works in order to maximize its value. Replace with levels of crit boost if you don’t want to deal with it.

Baseline build that does not need shrooms to function comfortably.

Guts Comfort

~1.7% better than 4pc Gore.

Added layer of protection against OHKOs through guts besides moxie.

Evade extender 2. (Though, evade extender is subjective whether it will have a positive or negative effect on your playstyle.)

Eating for delishroom (black belt hi) is required.

2pc Gore + 2pc Zoh

~1% better than Guts Comfort assuming a minimum uptime of 30% on counterstrike.

Use this set if you are comfortable trading away stamina surge 3 and guts for a bit more damage.

Eating for droolshroom (black belt lo) is required.

Thunder Set

Latent Power

Requires a minimum of 23% uptime on latent power before it starts to pull ahead of Guts Comfort in terms of dps.

While a minimum uptime of 36% is required to pull ahead of 2pc Gore + 2pc Zoh.

Awkward to use due to how latent power works and the inconsistent stamina reduction levels throughout the hunt.

Optimal use cases are for hunts that last around 5 minutes and 30 seconds.

Convert Element

Not recommended for multiplayer.

Only use on these monsters:

  • Rathalos
  • Rathian
  • G. Rathalos
  • Gravios
  • Zoh Shia

It is extremely important to prioritize discern dodging an elemental attack from a monster in order to activate convert element.

Recommended playstyle: Dash Dancing

Mantles

Evasion Mantle

Evasion mantle is the new meta.

  • Duration was increased from 90 seconds to 105 seconds.
  • Attack buff of 20% for 10 seconds.

Corrupted Mantle

As of TU1, the corrupted mantle has been nerfed.

Still usable if you play multiplayer since evasion mantle’s buff uptime will probably be low.

Capping Stamina Reduction

The stamina bar is the single most important resource to take note of while playing bow. After all, you can’t deal damage if you don’t have stamina to spend. There are 6 ways to go about capping our stamina reduction.

Thankfully, it is very easy to slot Constitution 5 purely using jewels with our current meta sets. Though if ever in the future that we are short on level 1 slots or if you want to slot in other level 1 jewels, feel free to use whichever combination you want.

Meat

  • Always choose meat for the +2 to attack.

Additional Ingredients

Droolshroom                         

  • Grants the food skill Black Belt (Lo).
  • Eat if your build has constitution 3.

Delishroom

  • Grants the food skill Black Belt (Hi).
  • Eat if your build has constitution 2.

Sild Garlic

  • Grants the food skill Moxie (Lo).
  • Eat if your build has constitution 5.
  • Stops one shots by leaving you at 1 health if you were to take lethal damage.

Specialty Sild Garlic

  • Grants the food skill Moxie (Hi).
  • Eat if your build has constitution 5.
  • Stops one shots and heals you a bit if you were to take lethal damage.

Fluffy Egg

  • Grants the food skill Caprice (Lo).
  • Eat if your build has constitution 5.
  • Once every 3 minutes, gives +7 attack for 10 seconds.

Airy Egg

  • Grants the food skill Caprice (Hi).
  • Eat if your build has constitution 5.
  • Once every 3 minutes, gives +15 attack for 10 seconds.

Finishing Touches

Monster Chili                

  • Eat if you don’t want to bother with cool and hot drinks.

Jeweled Mullet Roe

  • Eat if you know you are going to fight in a wet area.
  • Gives +3 attack when wet.

Information on Skills

Gogmapocalypse

  • Mutual Hostility I (2 pieces):
    Boost Elemental Damage by 20% of the weapon’s base ele (that is without skills and external sources) and adds 20 ele flat on top of it when the monster is enraged. (elemental Agitator)
  • Mutual Hostility II (4 pieces):
    - Boost Elemental Damage by 30% of the weapon’s base ele (that is without skills and external sources) and adds 40 ele flat on top of it when the monster is enraged.
  • Mutual Hostility II (4 pieces):
    - Applies a temporary damage barrier to you when a monster is enraged.
    - The shield disappears after: receiving 75 damage or after 2:20 has elapsed.
    - 2:50 cooldown between shield applications starts at the moment of receiving it (not it breaking). That means if the monster is permanently enraged you have 30 seconds of downtime (from 2:20 to 2:50).
    - If damage taken exceeds shield capacity it gets completely nullified.
    - Triggers both Counter Strike and Elemental Absorption on hit, without taking damage to hunter (better Peak Performance uptime).
    -
    Player is immune to negative status effects while the shield is up.

Lord’s Soul

  • Grants Guts: Allows to survive while struck by a lethal hit above the health threshold. Effect can be activated once per karting.
  • Lord's Soul boosts your raw by +5% but weakens your defense by -5%.
  • When Guts is spent, changes the bonuses to +5% defense and +3 resistance.

Tetrad Shot

  • 8/10/12 affinity buff starting from the 4th coating up to 10th coating.
  • Only the 4th coating and 6th coating get 3/6/10 attack and 5% element.
  • Don’t impulsively reload coatings if you want maximum value.

Critical Element:

  • Increases elemental damage dealt on critical hits by 5%/10%/15%

Charge Master

  • Increases elemental damage dealt on Charged Shot/Power Shot/Power Volley/ Flying Swallow Shot by 5%/10%/15% while having charge level of at least 1.
  • Does not affect uncharged moveset and TD/DP/iDP.

Piercing Shots/Pierce Jewel

  • Only affects Dragon Piercer and Thousand Dragons, giving them x1.05 raw
  • Does not affect pierce coatings. Even if you are running a build that uses pierce coatings, the relevant skill will be Spread/Power Shots.
  • Does not affect Focus Strike: Hailstorm follow up in form of Dragon Piercer.

Ballistics

  • Does not provide any increase in range for close-range coatings using backhops as a metric for distance.
  • It is possible the increase in range is less than a backhop’s worth.
  • Level 3 increases raw by 5 when in critical distance.

Burst

  • Buff lasts 3 seconds for bow.
  • Attack buff of 6/7/8/9/10.
  • Element buff of 4/6/8/10/12.

Black Eclipse

  • Level 1 inflicts the user with frenzy and grants 15% affinity when cured.
  • Level 2 gives 10 attack during frenzy and an additional 5 attack when cured for a total buff of 15 attack.

Antivirus

  • Frenzy cures faster.
  • 10% affinity buff that stacks with black eclipse when cured.

Counterstrike

  • Can be triggered when taking damage through hyper armor.
  • Relevant due to how discerning dodge animation ends in hyper armor.
  • Relevant due to how focus strike’s automatic dragon piercer has hyper armor.
  • Viable replacement for refresh jewels against monsters with multi hitbox attack such as Arkveld.

Evade Window

  • Works on discerning dodge.

Convert Element


Known Bugs

Pierce Coating Multi Hit vs Arkveld (FIXED)

  • It is possible to deal double damage by shooting starting from arm chain to head.
  • Seems to have been shadow fixed in one of the updates after release.

Phantom Load Coating (FIXED)

  • Loading coatings while holding charge will occasionally bug out and give you no reload even if animation and sound plays out.

Infinite Tracer

  • Step 1: Apply tracer > Charged shot
  • Step 2: Charging sidestep > Instant dragon piercer
  • Step 3: Repeat step 2 until 0 stamina
  • The bug will persist as long you don’t drop the initial charge before the first instant dragon piercer.
  • Use pierce coatings to compensate for weird tracer angles reducing ticks.

Instant Charge Level 1

  • Somehow getting a charge level without needing to charge during the third sequence of Charged shot > Power shot > Power volley.

Charged Shot Before Swallow Shot
