August 1, 2018

Dear Members of the Board of Trustees:

Two months ago, we wrote to you to express our grave concern over the terrible episodes that have shaken the university during the last year. We called for President Nikias to step aside to allow new leaders to heal the damage to the university, restore the trust of the community, and help us to move forward. Two months ago, you listened to the voices of faculty, students, alumni, and community members, and announced that President Nikias would step down in an “orderly transition” to new leadership. The announcement made international news, and the press, the broader public, and our community applauded this first step taken to restore trust and moral leadership. Yet today, with no follow-up regarding an interim President or a presidential search process, we find ourselves in a state of turmoil and uncertainty. Our students arrive on campus in less than three weeks. President Nikias cannot be the one who stands up to greet the new students at the Convocation. If he is, we face the prospect of student protests and walkouts, parent outrage, and a broad public perception that we have gone back on our commitment to accountability and transparency, as the world outside USC believes he has already resigned.

We write to you out of our shared devotion to USC and our commitment to its success. We remain grateful for the great gifts left to the university by President Nikias. But the only way to repair the university’s image and to bring the community together again is to move forward with new leadership. This is true regardless of whether President Nikias bore personal responsibility for Dr. Tyndall’s or Dr. Puliafito’s wrongdoing. It is true because great leaders take responsibility for what transpires on their watch, and in this case, that means stepping aside, to open the way for new leaders to help the university investigate, repair, and move past these episodes.

We ask the Board to move swiftly to announce the formal resignation of President Nikias and the installation of an interim President by the time our students arrive. A gracious and generous resignation from President Nikias would be yet another of his gifts to the Trojan Family, that will allow us to work together to bring about the next chapter in USC’s bright history.

Best regards,
