Good Morning WO Tech Team,

I hope you are doing well and having a great week! I wanted to share some resources that might be helpful for your families over the holiday break. During the holidays, students may receive technology as a gift from a relative or family member. Common Sense Education and other educational websites have resources that could be beneficial to help parents plan, monitor, and/or create balance with this new technology. I have listed them below for you to share with your building:

  • Family Tech Planners: Available in Spanish and English, this provides resources for parents to plan family expectations around the use of this in their household.
  • The American Academy of Pediatrics also has a "Family Media Plan" available for parents in English and Spanish
  • "Get My Internet": This resource provides a clear process for a family to determine if they qualify with the government for free internet access at their house. This is also available in Spanish.
  • Screen Time:

Monitoring Technology:

It is so important that parents and/or guardians monitor their child's use of the technology, and have conversations around online safety.

  • What apps are your child or children allowed to use?
  • How long can each app be used?
  • What things will I block as a parent?
  • What security settings will I set to keep my child safer online?

Many internet and cell phone companies have resources to support parents and/or guardians with monitoring their child's technology usage. Listed below are a few examples:

The previous examples posted were found on the internet by typing in a google search engine: "Title of Company" Parental Controls. If someone is unable to find what they are seeking in the search engine, it is recommended that they reach out to that company and inquire for more information.

Please reach out with any questions or concerns and I hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

Sincerely,
