💡 Tip!

In Dutch, "jij/je" is informal (you, to a friend) and "u" is formal (you, to a stranger or older person). When in doubt, use "u" — it's always polite!

💡 Tip!

"Smakelijk eten!" means "Enjoy your meal!" — you'll hear this all the time in Dutch restaurants. The response is simply "Dankjewel!"

Dutch supermarkets include Albert Heijn, Jumbo, and Lidl. You'll often hear "Heeft u een bonuskaart?" (Do you have a loyalty card?) at the checkout!

💡 Tip!

In Dutch, large numbers use periods where English uses commas, and commas where English uses periods. So €1.500,99 = one thousand five hundred euros and ninety-nine cents.

💡 Tip!

In the Netherlands, the bicycle (fiets) is king! Over 23 million bikes exist for 17 million people. Learning bike-related Dutch is very useful: "Mag ik een fiets huren?" = "Can I rent a bike?"

Dutch work culture values directness — it's normal and respectful to ask questions and share opinions. "Dat klopt" (That's correct) and "Geen probleem" (No problem) are phrases you'll hear constantly!
