One teacher and one other community member must complete a recommendation form on an applicant’s behalf.  Applicants should copy the links above, email them to their respective recommenders, and request that forms be completed no later than April 12, 2024, at 5pm.

BARTON HILLS ELEMENTARY PTA NICK AKERY

SCHOLARSHIP POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

OBJECTIVE:          To promote educational opportunities and continued success for Barton Hills alumni, the BHE PTA will recognize two BHE students each year for their academic strength, extracurricular and community involvement, and strong personal character.

I.         Number of scholarships: 2 

II.         Amount: (1) $1,000; (2) $500

III.         Source of funds: PTA Annual Budget

IV.         Award date and place: Notification will be sent by May 3, 2024, via email.

V.         Criteria for selection of winners:

  1. To be considered, the applicant must:

1.  Be a graduating senior;

2.  Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above;

3.  Have attended Barton Hills Elementary for at least two years;

4.  Intend to obtain post-high school education, including but not limited to, university, college, junior college, vocational school.

  1. From the pool of qualified applicants, selection for scholarship (1) will be based on the following weighted criteria:

    1.  Commitment to academics

2.  Extracurricular involvement in school activities

3.  Community involvement

4.  Strong personal character  

  1. From the pool of qualified applicants, selection for scholarship (2) will be based on community involvement outside of school with a particular emphasis on contributions made to Barton Hills Elementary and other area elementary schools.

  2. A committee of Barton Hills PTA members will conduct a blind evaluation of applications and rank each student on a scale of 1-5 in the categories listed above.  Scholarship (1) will be based on the rankings of all four categories.  Once that award winner is chosen, scholarship (2) will be awarded to the remaining applicant with the highest score for community involvement.  An individual student may not be awarded both scholarships.

VI.         Announcement of Scholarship Availability

A. Application information will be provided to Austin High School, LASA, McCallum & Ann Richards, as well as to the AISD district-wide scholarship portal.

B. Other media will be used to announce the availability of this scholarship to former students of Barton Hills, including the Barton Hills neighborhood listserv and the Barton Hills PTA social media pages.

VII.         Application Process

  1. Applicants will complete the Google Form Application, found here:

  2. Applicants will then ask one teacher to complete and submit a recommendation form, found here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdryHHVLp9RIOfN2hdMs3_LUSDvL4ZhriM1hUroseF0VsCKFg/viewform?usp=sf_link
  3. Applicants will also ask one other member of their community (does not have to be a teacher) to complete and submit a recommendation form, found here:

  4. The application and recommendation forms must be turned in by April 12, 2024.  Applications will not be considered unless two recommendation forms have also been received for the applicant.

VIII.         Winner Announcement: The Scholarship Chair will notify the winner via email. Winners will be asked to submit an acceptance letter, including a statement of the student’s intent to continue his/her education after graduation from high school.
