Welcome to the Shopp Mapp App!

The Venice Project Center’s web application for stores

This application was built by the 2015 Venice Project Center(VPC) Shops and Stalls team to visualize the changing face of the Venetian retail sector. To do this, the Shopp Mapp App can display two types of data: store information collected by the team (learn more here) and store information provided by the Chamber of Commerce (learn more here). The remainder of this document will go into detail about the different features in the Shopp Mapp App.

  1. Feature Overview

The following sections will go into detail about the different aspects of the application and how they work

  1. Data Collected by the Team

The top toolbar on the application is used to display and filter data collected by the Venice Project Center. To display any of the data an option from one of the three filters must be selected.

  1. Goods Sold

This filter allows the user to sort data based on what good or service a business offers. Every store is given a specific icon based on this field as well.

  1. Groupings

This filter allows the user to sort data based on what clientele a business is geared toward

  1. Plateatici

This filter allows the user to sort data based on whether a business has plateatici or not

  1. Combining Filters

The three filters mentioned above can be combined for finer sorting of data. For example displaying stores that are Restaurants, Tourists specific, and also contain Plateatici.

  1. Clicking on an Icon

Clicking on a given icon displays additional information on a specific business

  1. Data Provided by the Chamber of Commerce

The bottom toolbar on the application is used to display and filter data provided by Venice’s Chamber of Commerce. To display any of the data an option from one of the filters must be selected.

  1. Show Data + Timeline

This feature allows the  user to select whether to display or hide the records from the Chamber of Commerce. If the user selects “show data”, only the shops active during the year chosen on the slider are displayed.

  1. Ethnicity of Ownership

This filter allows the user to sort data based on the Ethnicity of Ownership of a Business

  1. Person/Corporation

This filter allows the user to sort data based on whether a business is a sole proprietor(person) or a corporation

  1. Economic Code

This filter allows the user to sort data based on a business's Economic Code (attivi)

  1. Combining Filters

The filters mentioned above can be combined for finer sorting of data. For example displaying stores that are Venetian, Sole Proprietors, and Bed and Breakfasts.

  1. Clicking on a Point

Clicking on a given red point displays additional information on a specific business

  1. Color Feature

The “Shopp Mapp App” also allows users to colorize islands based on specific variables such as, but not limited to, population total, population density, and average age. To do activate this feature simply click on the color icon.

When this data is used in conjunction with other shop data, a more detailed analysis can be achieved. The map below shows an example where population density and resident stores are overlaid on the map.
