Math 135 - Elementary Functions

Course Description: Algebra review, functions with special attention to polynomial, rational, exponential and logarithmic functions, composition and inverses of functions, techniques of graphing. Credit not allowed for 135 and 140, or 135 and 161. A passing grade fulfills the prerequisites for Math 140 and Math 203.

Course Objective and Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of Math 135, the student will be able to work with, apply, and answer questions pertaining to the material in the list of topics at the level of a standard “College Algebra” text.

Prerequisites: Any one of the following, or an articulated equivalent, within the past two years, will qualify a student for MATH 135: C in MATH 103 OR qualified placement test score (COMPASS minimum of 75 in algebra or 56 in college algebra).

Grading Policy:

There is a departmental exit exam for this course.  You must pass the departmental exam in order to qualify for a grade of C or higher.  If you pass the departmental exit exam your course grade will be determined by the following weighted categories.  

 Assignments (20%) This includes  Any assignments done after the due date will have a 10% reduction per day.  

Midterm Exams (15%) There will be two midterm exams that will total to 30% of the course grade.  These will closed notes, and closed book.  A scientific calculator may be used during exams.  Students are responsible to create their own study guides and materials.

Final Exam (20%) The final exam is cumulative, closed notes, and closed book.

Class Participation (15%) Attending class and participating in activities is required.  Please make every effort to attend class on time.  Arriving late to class or leaving early will be marked as half of an absence.

Quizzes (30%) There will be 5 quizzes throughout the term.  Cumulatively, these will make up 30% of your grade. If a quiz is missed for a reason deemed legitimate by the instructor it can be made up before the beginning of the next class.

Math 135 is a Credit or No Credit course.
