Second Sunday of each month, September through April, 2-4 p.m.
Sept 11, Oct 9, Nov 13, Dec 11, Jan 8, Feb 12, March 12, April 9
Join us for our once a month, free artmaking workshop. We will explore a variety of media (painting, clay, collage, printmaking, etc.) throughout the school year. Families and individuals are welcome. Children under 12 years must be accompanied by an adult or older sibling. We encourage teens and adults of all ages to join in and DO YOUR ART. We hope to see you at 2 p.m. so you can be a part of our gallery tour, as each project will be inspired by art in the current exhibition.
A FREE Afterschool Program
DISCOVERERS is for middle school students who have a strong interest in art and who will commit to regular weekly attendance throughout the school year.
Students who participate in the DISCOVERERS program will:
• Work and learn with local artists as they show you how they make art and why.
• Explore and experiment with a variety of art materials and processes.
• Develop and express independent ideas and discuss them.
• Learn new ways of problem solving.
DISCOVERERS meets every Wednesday right after school. Transportation from school to the Art Center is provided by the OCCK public transportation system. Students have a light snack and then begin making art with local and regional artists and Art Center staff members. When the sessions end at 5 p.m., parents/guardians pick up students at the Art Center.
Lessons for DISCOVERERS are planned in sequential, multi-week units. Participants need to attend every week in order to complete their art works. In the event of excused absences we will work with students to help them catch up. IMPORTANT: Any student who has two unexcused absences will be dropped from the program and replaced by a student from the waiting list.
The Art Center asks that all students:
• Abide by the same rules of conduct that apply at school.
• Treat people, ideas, materials, and place with respect.
• Show their willingness to think and work collaboratively and independently.
• The Salina Art Center has a policy of non-violence and provides a safe nurturing environment for creative expression.
How Can I Help a Student Participate?
• Download, print, and fill out this form, or
• Pick up a form at your school or the Salina Art Center, or
• Email email@example.com or call 785.827.1431 and request a form.
Parents/guardians receive an information packet through the mail and grant permission for their student to participate by sending in a signed postcard. Students are enrolled on a first-come, first-served basis. A waiting list is maintained for the duration of the program to ensure the maximum number of students have a chance to participate.
DISCOVERERS is supported, in part, with a grant from the Greater Salina Community Foundation, L. P. “Pat” Mullen Fund
A free, interactive arts lab dedicated to experimentation and practice with a variety of art materials and techniques
Visitors can choose from a menu of guided artmaking exercises, including activities related to the current exhibition, or simply explore on their own. Gallery attendants are on hand to answer questions, and resource materials are provided alongside an array of art media.
Exploring the qualities and characteristics of various materials in this relaxed setting encourages thoughtful creativity through artistic investigation and problem solving. The ARTery is a great place to wonder, invent, and learn; it has become a favorite leisure time destination for families, teens, and adults who wish to spend time in a creative environment.
Wednesday - Sunday, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.
