So how does an animated sitcom on Adult Swim becomes one of the best sci-fi shows on TV? I maintain that it’s because creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland take legitimate sci-fi concepts and go as far with them as humanely possible. The high point of the second season was “Total Rickall”, where the Smith family gets infected by alien parasites that implant “characters” into their memories that trick them into believing they’ve always been in their lives. The jokes here are firing at all cylinders, including the increasing absurdity of all the new characters. “Rick and Morty” is also that type of show that secretly has a dramatic heft to it that comes out at surprising moments; this season had the theme of taking you into Rick’s psyche ever-so-slightly, so there’s a small climactic moment here that I particularly loved. But the best part of this episode is easily Mr. Poopy Butthole. Poor Mr. Poopy Butthole.
