Jim Keenan - Google's Doc Sprint 2012

Google Open source program - DocSprint: team together & write a book about your software.

Evergreen was one of finalists and then one of final three chosen.

Google paid all expenses out to Mountain View, CA.

Similar to a HackAway

Week long, M-F, 3 teams

Day 1 unconference | learned about team, how a doc sprint worked

Title of document: Evergreen In Action

Day 2 came back and decided that book would be aimed at new Evergreen admins

Day 3

Day 4

Day 5

16 chapters, glossary & appendix

Google didn’t think EG could complete because of the large table of contents

everyone involved “broke their backs” to make it happen

Hard cover is now available, also on the docuwiki, free for download

all sales go to benefit EG project

Opening up to Questions:

How do you feel about handling proposals which are hated/loved?

Is there a way to write the code so as to not affect performance?

Follow-up Q: How Evergreen plans to do a QA ?

Q: ASRS (Automated Storage Retrieval System) - We have one in our library. How can Evergreen can be set-up for such an expensive system? (expensive b/c of equipment, etc.)

If we had to do it over again...?

Questions:

Q: How do you manage what features push through the top? [review/clarify later]

A1: On Sitka side - reason why had two pronged approach b/c new feature requests would result from common problems request. Made realize some features needed to be developed. Team side stick handled...and then libraries come with small-to-medium idea.

A2: Took top ones from each module as much as possibly afford.

Don’t know a good way around other than reviewing them and taking the top ones.
