What it is Like to Work Here

Island Terrace offers a host of different job opportunities. However, a nursing home environment is a special type of medical facility with special client needs.  Our "customers" live here and we call them “Residents”. We see them every single day. We see them when they are nice and we see them when they are cranky.  In many ways Island Terrace is like a four star hotel. We must provide impeccable service to ALL our guests.  Our staff offers respect, kindness, and top professionalism to our Residents.

All of us working in a nursing home environment must remember that it could be us needing this intimate service!  Everyone rallies to a challenge! Departments help each other with a smile. Many of us have been here for decades, and our family atmosphere offers unparalleled warmth and understanding.

We are exceptionally well staffed. Our employees are friendly, outgoing, and helpful with training. Everyone enjoys our spectacular location, and takes every opportunity to eat lunch on the porch or the north cliff picnic ground. Walking around the cranberry bogs and sitting in a variety of outdoor settings on break offer a tranquil breather.  This is a non-smoking island, and has been since 1972. If you are unwilling or unable to refrain from smoking while you are on the property, including in your car in the parking lots, this is not the place for you to work.

For benefits other than sick days you must be on full-time status, which is 30 hours or more per week and listed as “Full Time”.  After one month employment we offer to Full Time employees the Fallon Health Insurance Plan and paid holidays which include New Year’s, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.  Full Time employees earn two weeks of vacation during the first year (365 days) of employment.  Vacation can be used after six months of employment.

All employees - including part time and per diem - accrue sick time at the rate of one hour per 30 hours worked, with up to 40 hours (5 days) earnable per year.  After 90 days of employment, sick days can be used as accrued.  Sick days can be "banked" towards future years up to 80 hours (10 days) total to be used in the event of maternity, illness, or surgery.

Many of our part timers are students who work extensively during the summer and enjoy using the money they accrue to assist with school costs.

Island Terrace is an Equal Opportunity Employer. It is our policy to provide equal employment opportunity to all persons, regardless of age, race, religion, color, national origin, sex, political affiliations, marital status, non-disqualifying physical or mental disability, age, sexual orientation, membership or non-membership in an employee organization, or on the basis of personal favoritism or other non-merit factors, except where otherwise provided by law.
