My dear Marczi,

I got your last letter, of the 27th of last month – and we’re glad you’re feeling better – take care, and go to the office if you can – I have got the accountant’s report – and it’s certainly rather complicated – it looks as though you have huge debts – will they pay – and are you careful enough about whom you lend goods to? After all, you are owed a fortune. And how much do you owe Genshov in Berlin?

I’m curious to find out what the final verdict will be on the 10th of this month – write to me immediately – here – we will be here until the 15th of this month – then at the Hotel Russie in Rome. Before we left, I was so tired that I couldn’t even look through your business accounts. I’ll leave it until we get back.

In Genoa the Podestà – in other words, the mayor – did all he could to show us the treasures of the city – and put the director of the museums at our disposal – we visited the palaces where the Van Dyke [sic] paintings are, which he painted here 200 years ago. Everything is beautiful here – constant sunshine – and the sea right in front of us – I sent you a postcard. My friend Ruttkay^[1] is also here and we have got together a few times with Mrs Bárczy^[2] and her nice, clever son

There is a lot to organise at home, Paul’s wedding, Stephen – Pat’s business affairs,^[3] etc. and I’m putting on a small but very important exhibition in June^[4] – 

And now, dear old thing, I need to ask you to write and tell me straight away – if you know who Decsényi is – he seems to be a

dangerous man – he says that during the war you corresponded with me through him – etc. – and he is asking for a large sum of money – he’s taken out a writ against me in Paris – it’s terrible – I have never heard of this man – you will be hearing more about this, let me know immediately – the Hungarians give me no peace.

Bárczy^[5] sent two lovely colour reproductions of the Apponyi portrait [2596] – send three more to London – you have a stock of them

Kedves Marczim,

Utolsó leveled a múlt hó 27-ről vettem – s örvendünk, hogy jobban vagy – vigyázz s ha lehet járj el az üzletedben – a könyvelő kimutatását vettem – s bizony kissé complikált természetű – úgy látszik hogy óriási kintlevőségeid vannak – vajon fognak-e fizetni – s vigyázol-e eléggé, hogy kinek adsz kölcsönbe árut. Hiszen egy vagyon – melyet tartoznak neked. S mennyivel tartozol te Genshovnak Berlinbe?

Kíváncsi vagyok most a végítélet minő lesz e hó 10-én – írjál azonnal – ide – itt e hó 15-ig leszünk – ezután Hotel Russie Roma. Mielőtt elindultunk oly fáradt voltam, hogy nem is igen nézhettem át az üzleted kimutatását s hagyom mire visszajövünk –

Genuába a Podesta – vagyis polgármester  – kinek Marczim írt megtett mindent hogy a város oriási kincseit lássuk – mellénk adta a muzeumok igazgatóját – a Palotákba voltunk a hol Van Dyke [sic] képei vannak s melyeket itt festett 200 évvel ezelőtt. Itt minden gyönyörű – s állandó napsütés – s előttünk a tenger – küldtem képeslapot. Barátom Ruttkay is itt van s együtt voltunk néhányszor Bárczyné s okos szimpatikus fiával

Sok minden rendezendő van otthon, Pauli esküvője, Stephen – Pat üzleti ügyei, etc. s magam júniusba egy kisebb nagyon komoly kiállítást rendezek –

Most öregem arra kérlek – légy szíves azonnal nékem ide megírni – vajjon tudod e hogy ki Decsényi – egy veszedelmes embernek

látszik – azt írta, hogy te általa a háború idejében üdvözletekét küldtél nekem – etc. – s pénzt egy nagy összegben kér – s beperelt Párisba – rettenetes – magam soha nem hallottam róla – erről többet fogsz hallani azonnal értesíts – nincsen nyugtom a magyarokkal.

Bárczy két pompás színes reproductiót küldött Apponyi képéről – küldjél Londonba még hármat – van nektek belőle
