Welcome

Dear Friends,

NUIG Kayak Club are very excited to welcome you to Inter-varsities 2015. We have put huge amount of preparation into the event. We are really looking forward to showing off everything Galway has to offer in what we hope will be the best and biggest varsities ever.

The overall theme is to emphasize participation, inclusion and fun for all no matter their Kayaking ability, with the opportunity for everyone to compete in 2 events over the weekend! So we encourage any college that does not normally make it to varsities to come along and participate. While still maintaining a high level of competition on the awesome rivers and features we have around Galway!

We'll look to keep every event spectator friendly, with music and entertainment to encourage all your members to get out there to cheer and meet people before the madness. We will follow up with some of the best nightlife in the world in Galway City that'll certainly make you regret not putting NUIG first on our your CAO.

We have made a few changes to some events this year such as

  • Whitewater  will be held on Friday on our local grade 3, The Boluisce.
  • Long Distance K boat class will now be opened up to every college as we have permission to use the ICU K boats.
  • Polo will have a group stage followed by knockouts.
  • Freestyle will see a jam format for each college team.
  • A fifth event has now been added; the Boatercross, taking place on the lower corrib, that will be open to all!

This booklet is intended to give you a guide for the weekend as to when, where and how each event is going to be run. It contains all the information you need to know for the weekend, on and off the water.

I would like to thank everyone for all the hard work that has gone in over the last few months getting this event organized. Ideas and countless hours of work have rolled in from Galwegians and club members past and present to a varsities that promises to be like no other. Further thanks goes out to all the judges, ref’s, officials, stewards and sponsors from which we have had a great response and without whom none of this would be possible.

We hope everyone have as much fun competing, watching and being at this varsities as we have had organising it.

Yours with love,

Jayne Stephens

Location:                 Boluisce River, Spiddal, Galway

Date:                        Friday 6th February 2015

Registration:                 7:30-8:00am

Start:                        Aiming for first racer off before 8:45am

Finish:                        10:30am

Race Course

Start

The race course starts by a seal launch off the ‘The Footbridge’ into the bottom part of the G3 rapid. Timing starts when the competitor is launched from ‘The Footbridge’.

End

The race finishes after passing through the rapid ‘Poll Gorm’. The time will stop when the paddler passes through under the footbridge at the end of the rapid.

Course Difficulty

The competition section will consist of 4 grade 3 rapids interspaced by sections of grade 2/2+ water. See www.irishwhitewater.com for a detailed description. Rescue points will be provided at the 4 grade 3 rapids, known locally as The Footbridge, The Rock Garden, The Broken Weir and Poll Gorm. There will be a number of “gates” spaced throughout the course which paddlers must go though. The locations for these are to be finalized and a map of the course will be released.

The course is the same as that used for GalwayFest each year with the addition of the “gates”

Race Length

The race will take each competitor approx. 7-9 minutes to complete.

Race Format and Rules

  • Teams of 4. At least ONE Female/Male Paddler per Team.

Teams who cannot meet this requirement will have a time penalty applied.

Late competitors may be penalized.

  • Only plastic, mass produced ww/creek boats with a length of 9 foot (275cm) or under may compete. Boats must be fitted with all the correct fixtures (including but not limited to air bags, buoyancy and toggles) and meet the latest safety standards. The race organizers reserve the right to refuse admission to certain kayaks and their decision is final as to whether a boat is allowed compete.

  • Interference between competitors is not allowed. A competitor being passed out should give way to the faster competitor. Competitors will get a time penalty or be disqualified depending on severity of interference.

  • All competitors must wear a suitable buoyancy aid and helmet which conforms to the minimum standards as specified by Canoeing Ireland

  • Each competitor must dress appropriately to the weather conditions to be expected racing in exposed conditions on G3 water.

  • Competitors must be of a minimum Canoeing Ireland Level 3 (or equivalent).

Competitors will be asked to sign before race to state they have a Canoeing Ireland Level 3 certificate or equivalent. This is a safety requirement.

  • Each university is asked (if possible) to provide one safety boater for the event.

Results

  • Each competitor will be timed individually for their run. These times will be added together to get each teams overall times which will used to rank each college.
  • A DNS (either a no show or cannot field a full team) will have a time of the slowest finishing competitor + 3 min.
