Dear Dr. Roukema, Dr. Lovelin, Mr. Akaishi, The Parent Faculty Organization, and The Alumni Office,
As recent events are transpiring all over the world, we hope this message finds you safe and well. We are representing over 500 HKIS students, faculty, and alumni from the Classes of 1977 to 2021. Many of us had the fortune of attending HKIS from Kindergarten to Senior Year.
Upon reflecting on our time at HKIS, we are immensely grateful for the opportunities the school provided us, including our values of charity and community, which continue to be deeply ingrained into our lives. We recognize the privilege that comes with attending an institution like HKIS and are thankful for all the experiences the school provided us.
Given this, it breaks our hearts to see the school’s silence on the Black Lives Matter movement. We have not seen any newsletters, website posts, social media posts, or alumni emails acknowledging the severity of the issue at hand. We apologize if we missed a message on any of your platforms acknowledging this issue.
The recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and Tony McDade to name a few, have shed light on the systemic and institutional racism ingrained not only in America but around the world. We cannot choose to ignore this, as to be silent is to be complicit.
The education system inherently upholds forms of racism; yet, education in itself can be a powerful, if not the most powerful tool, in dismantling them. Therefore, HKIS has the responsibility to join leading international schools such as the International School of Doha and the International School of Bangkok in taking a public stance condemning the violence and systemic racism towards Black people.
In addition to making a public statement, we are requesting that HKIS provide the following promises:
We would like to emphasize that all 3 promises should be implemented at all age levels. Research shows that babies as young as 6 months to a year old have the ability to differentiate between race. By the ages of 4-6, children are likely to assign positive traits to people of their own ethnic group and negative traits to people who look different. It’s never too early to start teaching and learning about race and anti-racism.
Black students are an integral part of our student body, community of teachers, and alumni network. As stated in the 2019-20 graduation profile, nearly 100% of a typical class pursues tertiary study, over 80% of them at colleges and universities in the US. Many of your current students will go on to be leaders in diverse fields all around the world. As a highly respected and global institution that aims to provide an inclusive learning environment for over 2,800 students of 40 nationalities and diverse religious backgrounds, we believe it is the school’s duty to use its platform to lead by example.
