Resources for Trans Folks
- The Family Partnership: The Family Partnership provides culturally relevant mental health counseling to members of the transgender community and their families. Therapists can work with individuals to explore gender identity and to develop and pursue gender goals.
- Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center – Two Spirit/Native LGBTQ Program: Two Spirit/Native LGBTQ program creates safe space for socializing and re-connection with cultural teachings that hold Two Spirits in high esteem. Through the development of therapeutic community based in cultural strengths, participants improve their individual mental, emotional, and spiritual well being while also challenging the broader American Indian and mainstream LGBT communities to address biases that serve to keep Two Spirit people in conditions of extreme health disparity.
- The Aliveness Project: Based in Minneapolis, the Aliveness Project provides meals, a foodshelf, therapy, and care-advocacy for people with HIV/AIDS.
- Family Tree Clinic: Family Tree is committed to providing comfortable, competent, and accessible care to trans and gender non-conforming patients. Family Tree’s services include, but are not limited to, trans-affirming gynecological care, STI testing and treatment, birth control, including methods that are compatible with transition-related hormones, trans hormone care, and limited primary care services.
- JustUs Health: Formerly Rainbow Health Initiative and the Minnesota AIDS Project, JustUs Health works for equitable health care access and outcomes for people who experience injustice at the intersection of health status and identity. JustUs Health centers individuals and communities at risk of and living with HIV or facing barriers to equitable health care access and outcomes because of their identity as gender, sexual and/ or racial minorities.
- Minnesota Transgender Health Coalition: The Minnesota Transgender Health Coalition provides education, services, and advocacy to improve access to and quality of healthcare for transgender individuals. They offer a shot clinic, health services, training, and support groups.
- OutFront Minnesota: OutFront Minnesota is a community-based LGBTQ rights organization. Their justice team provides peer support and mentoring to trans people. They also provide legal services for trans individuals, including legal guidance in cases of discrimination.
- Gender Justice: Gender justice is a nonprofit legal and policy advocacy organization devoted to addressing the causes and consequences of gender inequality, including trans and GNC legal issues.
- Reclaim: Reclaim works to provide financially and culturally accessible care to queer and trans youth and their families, as well as continue to train practitioners and partner in community to create systems of change at the intersection of gender and racial justice.
Economic security and bills
Housing:
- The Conscious Kid org posts a mutual aid post when they have funding, which is around every couple of weeks. When they post, you are able to drop your payment information in the comments if you need funds for rent, bills, groceries.
- This is ZACAH's application for rental assistance. Their website: “If you are seeking rental assistance and do not qualify for emergency assistance through your county, or are seeking other forms of emergency financial assistance,” you can apply here.
- Twin Cities Mutual Aid Map’s list of housing resources (shelters, rent assistance, legal services for renters, bill assistance, issues with landlords and bosses)
- Minnesota Energy Assistance Program
- Emergency Housing Assistance due to COVID. Applications are currently closed, but the website states that additional resources will become available in the coming weeks.
- All evictions are suspended in Minnesota for the duration of the peacetime state of emergency-- if your landlord is trying to evict you, report them to the Attorney General
- If you know you can’t make rent, check out the #CancelRentMN campaign to find a sample non-payment notice to send to your landlord
- Shelters:
- Adult Shelter Connect — 612-248-2350 — Reservations for Adult Shelters in the Twin cities. Over the phone only, no walk-ins.
- Avenues — Avenues operates two shelter and transitional living programs. Minneapolis Avenues, in North Minneapolis, provides emergency shelter and housing in a welcoming and youth-driven environment.
- Beacon Shelter Hotline — 888-234-1329 — If you have an immediate need for shelter, call the Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative Shelter Hotline.
- Housing Link — A big sortable list of supportive & transitional housing in Minnesota.
- The Link — Support for youth and young families who are experiencing homelessness.
- Simpson Housing — 612-874-8683 — Housing, support, and advocacy for people experiencing homelessness.
- St. Stephen’s — 612-874-0311 — Provides street outreach, shelter, and supportive housing.
- Union Gospel Mission — Food + shelter, addiction recovery, mental health resources, education / job training, stated mission is to help people facing homelessness find a way off the streets for good.
