IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS FOR PICTURE DAY: Picture day is right around the corner. We will be working with TSS Photography this year. They offer a unique View First picture day program which is a different process than past years.
The photographers will have rosters on hand so you do NOT need to turn anything in on or before picture day! No money or package selections are collected on picture day. For those that pre- register using the link below, you will receive an email within a few days after picture day telling you that the photos are ready to view. The email will include a link to your child’s photos. (Keep an eye out in your junk/spam folder. Our emails sometimes end up there)
IMPORTANT: In order to receive your email link to your child’s photos, you will need to register your child using the link below. This information will allow us to send your child’s photos directly to you. Please register EACH CHILD SEPARATELY.
http://regis.viewyour.photos/direct/91039/27242983
THE REGISTRATION LINK WILL ONLY BE ACTIVE UNTIL THE END OF THE DAY ON PICTURE DAY
Your student will also be bringing home a 3x5 paper with your individual link on picture day. These tend to get lost so registering ahead of time is the best way to ensure you get your link to your photos.

Safe2Say Something
Safe2Say Something is a youth violence prevention program run by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General. The program teaches youth and adults how to recognize warning signs and signals, especially within social media, from individuals who may be a threat to themselves or others and to “say something” BEFORE it is too late. With Safe2Say Something, it’s easy and confidential to report safety concerns to help prevent violence and tragedies. Here’s how it works:
Second Step
Social-emotional learning is "the process by which children grow and develop their emotional lives and their relationships." Focused on five core competencies: self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, relationship skills, and social awareness, SEL supports the wellbeing of the whole child.
In the past, we have utilized teacher-created resources as well as the OLWEUS program as a way to teach SEL skills to all students which is in support of goal two of our district strategic plan. I am proud to announce that this year we will be implementing Second Step as a school-wide resource to teach SEL skills.
Second Step is a research-based program that utilizes a scope and sequence that builds on skills over time and year to year. You can learn more about the Second Step program here. Our children are learning behavior all the time, both implicitly and explicitly. Teaching Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) skills allows children the opportunity to practice and cultivate these skills in a supportive environment.
1:1 Device Distribution
All Mt. Lebanon students in grades K-5 are issued a device for their learning at school and at home. Students in Kindergarten and 1st grade receive iPads. Students in grades 2-5 receive Chromebooks. More details about the 1:1 device program and related information/resources can be found at https://www.mtlsd.org/families/technology/one-to-one. Technology policies and procedures can be found here.
As a reminder, the deadline to apply for the Equipment Protection Plan is October 1, 2024. Families are responsible for any and all damage to their District-owned device. This $50 fee covers any and all accidental damage to their students' equipment for the entire academic year. Students can be enrolled using this link.
Why should we sign up for this?
The average cost for a damage incident to a District-owned iPad or Chromebook was $129 last year. Damage can happen (and has happened!) from dropping the device, knocking the device off of a table, tripping and falling with the device, tossing a full backpack with the device onto the ground, and more. If the cost for a damage incident exceeds the replacement cost of the device, you could be charged up to $400 per incident if your student is not enrolled in this plan. Enrolling in the EPP ensures that for $50, all accidental breaks and damage will be covered for the year for your student.
I have more questions!
Full details about the EPP including the link/button to ENROLL can be found on the District’s One-to-One Resources page (www.mtlsd.org/One-to-One). Additionally, all questions and feedback are welcomed by our RemoteSupport team when you email RemoteSupport@mtlsd.net
SCHOOLOGY
Schoology, the Mt. Lebanon School District's official Learning Management System (LMS), provides families with a deeper look into their student's classwork and learning progress. All online assignments will be collected through Schoology. Calendars in Schoology will have school events listed as well as course events and assignments. The Schoology calendar will continue as the primary calendar for classroom activity. Classroom assignments, due dates, reminders and other events will be posted by teachers in the Schoology calendar.
We hope this video is useful as you get started with your account. Additionally, an orientation course for families MTLSD’s Family Guide to Schoology is available within the Schoology platform. Visit our website (www.mtlsd.org/families/technology/schoology) for directions to join this course.
Please note that all important information, resources, dates, and announcements will be posted on our Howe Schoology Page. You can also find information about Schoology and how to access it by visiting our District's Schoology Help Page.

A Note From The School Counselor…
Dear Families,
Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year at Howe Elementary School! We had an amazing first week of school last week, and hope that this positive energy will continue into the rest of this school year.
I want to take this opportunity to introduce you to our school counseling intern this semester! Mrs. DeShong is joining us from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) and will be working alongside me from August-December. She will be joining me in teaching classroom lessons, meeting with students individually and in small group settings. She will also assist with lunch bunches and any student concerns that will come up during her time with us. She is currently looking for a few students to join her caseload so if you are interested in having your child meet with Mrs. DeShong for short term individual or group sessions, please let me know and please help me welcome her to the Howe Community!
As for lunch bunch, new students will be given priority. Parent/guardian permission is required. Please complete this form if your child is interested in participating in a lunch bunch this year. We are excited to see you soon!
As always, please reach out if you have any questions or concerns. I had a great time meeting with your child in their classroom today. You can ask them about what they learned in our lesson. Have a great 2024-2025 year!

Entering and exiting through these doors will allow the students to enter and leave the building in a less congested manner. We will have adults at each door to welcome and guide the students to their homerooms.
Arrival - With classroom instruction beginning promptly at 8:45 AM, it is extremely important that your child arrives at school on time. Please remember that children need to physically be in homerooms (not just dropped off) by 8:35 AM otherwise, they will be marked tardy. It is recommended that children are dropped off between 8:20 AM and 8:30 AM.

Handbook
The Elementary Handbook contains useful and important information regarding school policies, procedures, and programs. The Elementary Handbook information is arranged by topics. Please browse the topic list in the handbook linked below to find the information you need.
Attendance Policy
Students absent from school must return with a written excuse or an email within 3 school days to their teacher. If the excuse is not provided to the teacher by the third day, the absence will be considered illegal. If a student accumulates more than three days of unlawful absences, an attendance hearing at the school will be held and the matter may be referred to the district justice. Please note: If an excuse is not turned in within a few days the school will alert the parent via email.
When a student is absent for five or more consecutive days for health reasons, he/she must be readmitted to the school through the Health Office.
Students will not be granted more than five days of pre-approved absence (an absence requested beforehand) during the school year. Families are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the week-long holidays during December and April of this school year.
The school building will be locked down all day except during the AM arrival and PM dismissal times. All visitors/parents that want to access the school must enter through the main entrance (Door A1) and be buzzed into the school office. Visitors should be prepared to identify themselves when asked by the school office staff. All visitors MUST have a photo ID handy when the office staff asks for identification. While in the school, visitors must wear a visitor’s pass (in a clearly visible manner). Visitors need to check out in the school office before leaving the school. Please remember that these measures are in place to protect the students and staff.
School Playground Use
NOTE: If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to call the main office.
To assist in keeping our students and community members safe, please refrain from parking in the Go Zone. Go Zone spaces are designated for student drop off. If you need to walk your student(s) to the building, please find parking along our side streets.
Go Zone rules and safety suggestions: Please…
Go Zone rules and safety suggestions: Please…
As a result of a cooperative effort involving the Mt. Lebanon School District, the Mt. Lebanon Police Department, and the PTA, Go Zones were created near the entrance of each elementary school where drivers can drop off and pick up children in the safest and most efficient way possible.
The success of the Go Zones requires compliance by drivers dropping off children before school and picking up children after school.
As we continue to strive for a safe and inclusive environment at our school, I want to take a moment to address the importance of respecting accessible parking spaces at Howe.
It has come to our attention that there have been instances where the designated accessible parking spaces have been misused or occupied by vehicles without the appropriate permits.
Accessible parking spaces are specifically designated to accommodate individuals with disabilities who may have limited mobility. By utilizing these spaces without proper authorization, we not only inconvenience those who genuinely need them but also undermine the principles of equality and accessibility.
Please review the following guidelines regarding accessible parking spaces

PTA News |
Hello, Howe families!
I’m pretty sure I just threw away my eclipse glasses, and it’s been a few weeks since the pool
was cloudy, so I guess it’s time for school to start? And now that my second-grader has
successfully found his way down a new hallway a few times (as far as I know, at least), it’s high
time for me to get my affairs in order - including this whole “PTA” thing.
“PTA? Isn’t that the thing where, uh … wait, what’s a PTA?”
I’m glad you asked! It’s the group of parents who support the school and our kids by contributing
time, organizational abilities, and enthusiastic attitudes. We run most of the extracurricular
events such as the Sunny Funny Fair and Family Reading Night; we provide in-building support;
and advocate for our community in countless ways, both visible and unseen.
“Oh, so it’s just for parents with unlimited free time, right?”
Nope! The opportunities to join and help are as boundless as the time you have - or don’t have.
Whether you’re able to carve out an hour a week to help compile this newsletter (a role for
which I’m still soliciting!), an hour a month to just come to meetings, or a one-off hour to run
the ringtoss at the Sunny Funny Fair, we’ve got a spot for you.
“I’m intrigued, but I’m not sure if I can swing a second mortgage right now to afford it all…”
Good news, then! My financial guy assures me that rates will fall someday soon, and all I need
to do is put all my assets into something called the Blinkchunk Blackshank Howecoin?
…
No, it’s just $15 to join - for the whole year. And $8 of that goes right back into the building,
while the remainder goes to the regional and national PTA associations with which we’re
affiliated - opening the door for us to receive grants, participate in larger events, and reap the
benefits of being part of the national community of hard-working and devoted families.
“Alright, I’m in! But, uh, who are you, faceless text in an email?”
I’m Greg Engle, this year’s President. Many of you know my second-grader, Brennan; he’s the
tall goofball with a boundlessly gregarious attitude. Our family is rounded out by my wife, Jamie,
and our four-year-old Julian. I’m thrilled to play my small role in keeping this operation running.
Join here! https://howepta.membershiptoolkit.com/home
Your membership needs to be renewed every year, so don’t forget!
Our first meeting is the evening of September 11, right here in the building. Can’t wait to see
you there!
