This page is a repository of information for the SOAS field study to take place in the Southern US in summer 2013. New information will be added here as it becomes available. If you have questions about this page, email jlj.colorado@gmail.com or any of the other SOAS organizers.
Post-Campaign Science Telecons & Meetings
- An SAS science meeting will take place around May 2014, actual date & location TBD
- We plan to do telecon science meetings after the campaigns at regular intervals for SOAS (perhaps all SAS if people are interested)
- In terms of format, we may have a science telecon every other Wed @ 9am for 1-hr only (actual day & time TBD), with each meeting focusing on a topic. E.g. we may have a first meeting on hygroscopicity and water uptake, a second one on gas & particle nitrates, a 3rd one on partitioning, and so on, so that each topic comes back every ~2-3 months. The actual topics should be determined based on interest and critical mass, and if possible they would involve the whole SAS community (SENEX, Look Rock, RTP, NOMADDS) to participate and present. If we do this well, these meetings can be very useful in cross-pollinating the analyse, identifying collaborations etc.
- If you have suggestions about these post-campaign science meetings let Annmarie, Allen, and Jose, or your site/platform PIs know.
- Note that we should also keep using the SAS Google+ group, and that may also be a way to disseminate preliminary results etc.

Email list, Instruments, Meetings, and Sites
- Telecons and Meetings (reverse chronological order):
- Radioactive form for state of AL, needs to be completed for anyone bringing radioactive sources
- Indemnification form (to be filled by every institution, not every person)
- Trailer layout: view-only (participants) and editable (organizers)
- Info on SEARCH and previous pubs
- Smaller ground site in Look Rock, TN. Contact Jason Surratt and Lynn Russell if interested on that site, power and space are very limited.
- EPA site at Research Triangle Park, NC. Power and space are available for other instruments. Contact John Offenberg at EPA if interested
Field Campaign Dates
- SOAS Ground Supersite in Alabama: measurements from 0:00 (Local Time) in June 1 till 23:59 (Local Time) in July 15, 2013 (~6 weeks).
- The plan is to have the sites ready with power and trailers by May 1, so that people can set up experiments, inlets etc. ahead of time. We will confirm this as the setup is underway.
- Dates for other campaigns we are collaborating with
- NOMADSS - NSF/NCAR C130 aircraft campaign (incl. SOAS component): June 1 - July 15, 2013
Organization
- Annmarie Carlton of Rutgers is PI for the project. Co-PIs include Allen Goldstein (UC Berkeley), Jose-Luis Jimenez (CU-Boulder) and Alex Guenther (NCAR)
- Jim Moore (jmoore@ucar.edu 303/497-8635) from EOL’s Field Project Services and Eric Edgerton (eedgerton@atmospheric-research.com) and Karsten Baumann (kbaumann@atmospheric-research.com) (ARA) will coordinate the setup at the zb SEARCH site

Actions needed from SOAS PIs (already collected, left here for reference)
- If you plan to deploy instruments at the ground sites, we need the info on site location, power, space, and radioactive sources entered in the shared spreadsheet at http://tinyurl.com/SOAS-org
- Please include all pumps, laptops etc. Often people show up at the site and need 2 kVA more than they asked for, as they forgot to include some sampling pumps, heaters etc. Since the power will be set up from scratch to match our needs, this will create problems.
- Please report the ACTUAL power usage of your instruments, rather than specifications or info on the labels, which often is several times higher than the actual power consumption. You can measure the power of your instrumentation really easily with a Kill-a-Watt or similar devices, and there is no excuse for not doing the measurement.
- Note that for pumps and some other devices such as heaters, power needs are higher during startup than during steady operation. In that case please report both numbers there and we'll use some intermediate value, since instruments won't all start at the same time (even if we lose power and it comes back).
- If you are not sure whether you will deploy an instrument, please DO ENTER it on the spreadsheet and mark it as “tentative, will confirm by XX/XX/XXXX”
