Thursday of the Second Week of Easter

Today's Reading: 1 John 5:4-10

Daily Lectionary: Exodus 25:1-22; Luke 5:17-39

There are three witnesses: the Spirit, the Water, and the Blood, and these three are one. (1 John 5:7-8)

He is risen indeed! Alleluia! In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Who or what bears witness to Jesus? Who or what delivers Him to the world? Who or what delivers Him to you? How do you know you have Him? Do you have to find Him, feel Him, get to know Him?

The truth is He's already yours! He was delivered to you. The Spirit did that. That's the Spirit's job, after all--to deliver Jesus. He did it in the water of the Baptismal font. He did it in the Body and Blood of the Supper. In those things the Spirit is actually working, bearing witness to Jesus, delivering Him to you so you never have to wonder.

But it can't be that easy, can it? We want it to be something else than the Spirit bringing Jesus to us. We want to do something. We want some sort of feeling, or some sort of magnificent experience to bear witness that we really do have Jesus.

But you really do have Jesus. We all need to repent of our chasing after feelings and other things to tell us that we have really do have Jesus. As surely as Jesus was crucified under Pontius Pilate, as surely as He died, as surely as the blood and water flowed from His spear-pierced side, as surely as He rose from the dead--as surely as all those things, you have Him.

You are His; He made and saved you. He is yours; He was delivered to you by the Spirit through the water and the Blood. Word attached to the water in the font is the sure and certain testimony of the Spirit. There He's delivered Jesus to you. He will continue to do deliver Him to you in the Blood of the Chalice until the Spirit raises you on the Last Day and you see Jesus face to face. He is risen indeed! Alleluia! In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.

Water, blood, and Spirit crying, By their witness testifying To the One whose death-defying Life has come, with life for all. (Water, Blood, and Spirit Crying, LSB 597:1)
