Saul Bernstein and Eleanor Belkin Bernstein were born in Pittsburgh because their parents came here from Eastern Europe to make a better life.
Though we did not know our parents when they were children and young adults, we do know that the life of comfort they created for us contrasted in every way with their
own.
They were optimistic about their future together although, by today’s standards, their prospects seemed dim. Poverty and the lack of a college education limited their options, but not their dreams.
Our mother is a remarkable woman. Her organizational talents made her a national leader in B’nai B’rith Women, but parenting was her true calling. She was a homemaker who made our home where we truly felt at home. Mom is smart and capable, productive and funny, tender and loving.
Our father is a great man. He survived more than four years of World War II combat to return to Pittsburgh, to his work and to our family. Then he built and lost and rebuilt businesses; and although we are told that our fortunes rose and fell, we always felt profoundly secure. Dad is generous and warm, dependable and honest, determined and strong.
From our parents we learned simple, valuable lessons: Work hard. Tell the truth. Think. Think of others. Share.
Our parents have loved us equally and unconditionally and so we are able to love each other and ourselves.
With this tribute, we honor them for who they are, for what they have done, and for what they have set in motion in us and in our children.
