*MOTIVATION AND DESCRIPTION*

The eighteenth edition of the International Computer Vision Summer School aims to provide both an objective and clear overview and an in-depth analysis of the state-of-the-art research in Computer Vision. The last decade has seen a revolution in the theory and application of computer vision and machine learning. The next decade will see machine perception in embodied systems which learn representations for and from action and interaction.

The courses will be delivered by world renowned experts in the field, from both academia and industry, and will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of real Computer Vision problems as well as examples of their successful commercialisation.

The school aims to provide a stimulating opportunity for young researchers and Ph.D. students. The participants will benefit from direct interaction and discussions with world leaders in Computer Vision. Participants will also have the possibility to present the results of their research, and to interact with their scientific peers, in a friendly and constructive environment.

*LIST OF SPEAKERS*

*SCHOOL DIRECTORS*

• Roberto Cipolla, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom

• Sebastiano Battiato, University of Catania, Italy

• Giovanni Maria Farinella, University of Catania, Italy

*SPECIAL SESSION - Industry meets Student*

In addition to the academic programme, we are organizing a special session to allow students to meet and learn about the opportunities and activities at the world leading research laboratories and companies which are exploiting computer vision.

*INDUSTRIAL PANEL*

*READING GROUP*

https://iplab.dmi.unict.it/icvss2024/ReadingGroup

Good ideas have deep roots. Understanding such roots is key to being able to generate new ideas moving forward. The main goal of the Reading Group is to understand and discuss with mentors ways in which exploration of these roots can be performed. The students will have a chance to meet and interact and discuss research with the speakers of the school in a dedicate session called “Meeting with Mentors”.

Detailed instructions with the rules of engagements will be sent to students after acceptance notification.

*ESSAY COMPETITION*

https://iplab.dmi.unict.it/icvss2024/EssayCompetition

The essay competition reflects the importance of considering the “real world” social impact of technology alongside the fundamental goals of basic R&D.

Computer Vision is an area of scientific and technological development that will continue to have a profound impact on society. It will redefine the way in which information technology intersects and interfaces with medicine and other disciplines, it will play a key role in the care of an ageing population, and it is already a fundamental aspect of modern security technology.

Participants in the competition may write a piece of original work on a topic. Detailed instructions with the rules of engagements will be soon online.

*POSTER SESSION*

https://iplab.dmi.unict.it/icvss2024/CallForPosters

Accepted students may submit a poster to present their research activity. The poster should be sent before 7 June 2024, 23:59, GMT +2:00, Italy Time. Please, read the Call for Student Poster section for poster guidelines.

A subset from the submitted posters will be selected by the school committee for short oral presentation. A best presentation prize will be given to the best presentation selected by the school committee.

*SOCIAL EVENTS*

In amongst a packed program of over 30 hours of school activities, there will be time for a tour of the ancient and picturesque town of Ragusa Ibla (RG) including the opportunity to experience the local traditions in the form of folk dancing and a delicious feast featuring many of the local delicacies. A social dinner and a party on the beach are also part of the social program.

Short and Accelerating Innovation Submission Deadline: 12 June 2023

Short and Accelerating Innovation Notification: 14 July 2023

Camera-ready for all submissions: 24 July 2023

Over the years, TPDL was established as an important international forum focused on digital libraries and associated technical, practical, and social issues. TPDL encompasses the many meanings of the term “digital libraries,” embracing the whole spectrum of the Library, Archives, and Museums (LAM) community; operational information systems with all manner of digital content; new means of selecting, collecting, organizing, and distributing digital content; and theoretical models of information media, including document genres and electronic publishing. Digital libraries may be viewed as a new form of information institution or an extension of libraries' services.

Representatives from academia, cultural heritage institutions, government, industry, research communities, research infrastructures, and others are invited to participate in this annual conference. The conference draws from various research areas, including computer science, information science, librarianship, archival science and practice, museum studies and practice, technology, social sciences, cultural heritage, digital humanities, and scientific communities.

TPDL historically approached “digital libraries,” embracing the field at large and also comprehending three key areas of interest that can be synthesized as scholarly communication (e.g., research data, research software, digital experiments, digital libraries), e-science/computationally-intense research (e.g., scientific workflows, Virtual Research Environments, reproducibility) and library, archive, museum and information science (e.g., governance, policies, open access, open science). As digital cultural heritage ties into digital humanities, TPDL aims to include this closely connected field.

Note that all deadlines are 23:59 (11:59 pm) in the AoE (Anywhere on Earth) time zone on the date specified.

My name is Marica Novakovic from IntechOpen, the world's leading Science, Technology and Medicine Open Access book publisher.

We came across your research and thought that you would be interested in learning more about relevant peer reviewed Open Access scientific literature available to read, share and download completely for free on the IntechOpen platform.

Our founder understood the need for freely accessible and open research.

“Back when I was a PhD student of Robotics in Vienna, I found it difficult to easily access the academic research I needed. Inspired by this need, and together with peers, we decided to create a new digital platform where researchers like ourselves could find critical information more easily and for free. Our first publications went online in 2004 and thus the IntechOpen publishing platform was born - built by scientists for scientists.”
Alex Lazinica
Founder & Executive Chairman, IntechOpen

Today, with over 17 years of experience and expertise, 6,300 OA books published, and a community of over 170,000 satisfied scientists globally, we have established relationships with leading research and funding organizations such as NASA, Wellcome Trust, the European Commission, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Additionally, we actively work on indexing our authors' works by the renowned databases such as Web of Science and DOAB among others, and IntechOpen as a publisher is a member of respected organizations like OASPA, ALPSP, STM, and COPE.

Therefore, as part of the science, technology and medicine community we wanted to contact you to make you aware of the opportunities that IntechOpen offers, so please feel free to explore the current projects open for submission.

CfP International Summer School “Oral History Meets European Studies. Sources, Tools and Methods in the Digital Age”

3 July – 6 July 2023

Maison Schuman, Luxembourg City

Deadline for the submission of applications is 31 January 2023.

The Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH), together with the European University Institute (Florence, Italy) and the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory (Frankfurt, Germany), organises a Summer School to be held at the Maison Robert Schuman in Luxembourg City from 3 to 6 July 2023. The Summer School invites students to explore methods of oral history and to test digital tools, while it pays attention to how digital sources may shape narratives in contemporary European history.

The Summer School is geared at PhD candidates as well as early career scholars (postdoctoral students) specialising in European History / European studies, who use oral history in their research. The programme will tackle the main stages in the production, uses, and archiving of oral history interviews through a set of transversal workshops, presentations, and roundtable discussions with experts. The Summer School will be enriched by hands-on activities, in which participants will test the discussed tools and methods. Students will have the opportunity to present their research projects and to receive feedback from their peers and experts. In addition, the participants should be offered a guided visit to the European Parliament.

Some transversal main topics to be discussed during the summer school are:

  1. Co-production: How to conduct interviews, methodologies (questionnaires, etc.), technical aspects (sound and video recording), ethics, memory, and remembrance.
  2. Curation: Data management and indexation, transcription (from oral to written record), software, uses of audio-visual material, digitization, and digitalization.
  3. Analysis: How to integrate digital oral sources in an academic discourse, legal aspects (authorship and copyright) and data treatment.
  4. Archiving: Individual collections and historical archives.
  5. Sharing: Communication, exhibitions, websites, museums, media, and public history projects.

The working language is English. Applicants should send a 300-word abstract detailing their research topic and how they use oral history interviews along with questions they would like to discuss/deepen and a short bio. Applications should be sent to valerie.schafer@uni.lu.

The organisers will provide accommodation and lunches. Participants need to make their own travel arrangements and they must bring their own computer.

Notification of acceptance: 15 February 2023

Cultural Heritage Data as Humanities Research Data?

19th Workshop on Multiword Expressions (MWE 2023)

Full-day workshop colocated with EACL 2023, Dubrovnik, Croatia, May 2 or 6, 2023

MWE 2023 website: https://multiword.org/mwe2023/

Submission deadline: February 13, 2023

Important Dates

Paper Submission Deadline:February 13, 2023

Notification of acceptance:        March 13, 2023

Camera-ready papers due:        March 27, 2023

Workshop: May 2 or 6, 2023

Multiword expressions (MWEs) are word combinations that exhibit lexical, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, and/or statistical idiosyncrasies (Baldwin & Kim 2010), such as by and large, hot dog, pay a visit and pull one's leg. The notion encompasses closely related phenomena: idioms, compounds, light-verb constructions, phrasal verbs, rhetorical figures, collocations, institutionalised phrases, etc. Their behaviour is often unpredictable; for example, their meaning often does not result from the direct combination of the meanings of their parts. Given their irregular nature, MWEs often pose complex problems in linguistic modelling (e.g. annotation), NLP tasks (e.g. parsing), and end-user applications (e.g. natural language understanding and MT), hence still representing an open issue for computational linguistics (Constant et al. 2017).

For almost two decades, modelling and processing MWEs for NLP has been the topic of the MWE workshop organised by the MWE section of SIGLEX in conjunction with major NLP conferences since 2003. Impressive progress has been made in the field, but our understanding of MWEs still requires much research considering their need and usefulness in NLP applications. This is also relevant to domain-specific NLP pipelines that need to tackle terminologies most often realised as MWEs. Following previous years, for this 19th edition of the workshop, we identified the following topics on which contributions are particularly encouraged:

  • MWE processing and identification in specialized languages and domains
  • MWE processing to enhance end-user applications
  • MWE identification and interpretation in pre-trained language models
  • MWE processing in low-resource languages

Through this workshop, we would like to bring together and encourage researchers in various NLP subfields to submit MWE-related research, so that approaches that deal with processing of MWEs including processing for low-resource languages and for various applications can benefit from each other. We also intend to consolidate the converging effects of previous joint workshops LAW-MWE-CxG 2018, MWE-WN 2019 and MWE-LEX 2020, the joint MWE-WOAH panel in 2021, and the MWE-SIGUL 2022 joint session, extending our scope to MWEs in e-lexicons and WordNets, MWE annotation, as well as grammatical constructions. Correspondingly, we call for papers on research related (but not limited) to MWEs and constructions in:

  • Computationally-applicable theoretical work in psycholinguistics and corpus linguistics;
  • Annotation (expert, crowdsourcing, automatic) and representation in resources such as corpora, treebanks, e-lexicons, and WordNets (also for low-resource languages);
  • Processing in syntactic and semantic frameworks (e.g. CCG, CxG, HPSG, LFG, TAG, UD, etc.);
  • Discovery and identification methods, including for specialized languages and domains such as clinical or biomedical NLP;
  • Interpretation of MWEs and understanding of text containing them;
  • Language acquisition, language learning, and non-standard language (e.g. tweets, speech);
  • Evaluation of annotation and processing techniques;
  • Retrospective comparative analyses from the PARSEME shared tasks;
  • Processing for end-user applications (e.g. MT, NLU, summarisation, language learning, etc.);
  • Implicit and explicit representation in pre-trained language models and end-user applications;
  • Evaluation and probing of pre-trained language models;
  • Resources and tools (e.g. lexicons, identifiers) and their integration into end-user applications;
  • Multiword terminology extraction;
  • Adaptation and transfer of annotations and related resources to new languages and domains including low-resource ones.

Shared Task

We do not have a shared task this year, but a new release of the PARSEME corpus of verbal MWEs is currently underway. We encourage submission of research papers that include analyses of the new edition of the PARSEME data and improvements over the results for PARSEME 2020 shared task as well as SemEval 2022 task 2 on idiomaticity prediction.

Submission formats:

The workshop invites  two types of submissions:

  • archival submissions that present substantially original research in both long paper format (8 pages + references) and short paper format (4 pages + references).
  • non-archival submissions of abstracts describing relevant research presented/published elsewhere which will not be included in the MWE proceedings.

LOCATION

The city of Plzen (or Pilsen in Germanic languages) is situated in the heart of West Bohemia at the confluence of four rivers: Uhlava, Uslava, Radbuza, and Mze. With its approx. 171,000 inhabitants it is the fourth largest city in the Czech Republic and an important industrial, commercial, and administrative centre. It is also the capital of the Pilsen Region. In addition, it has been elected the European Capital of Culture for 2015 by the Council of the European Union.

The city of Plzen has a convenient location in the centre of West Bohemia, close to the German border, on the confluence of four rivers. The place lied on the crossroads of important medieval trade routes and nowadays it naturally forms an important highway and railroad junction; thus, it is easily accessible using both individual and public means of transport.

Plzen lies 85 km (53 mi) south-westwards from the Czech capital Prague, 222 km (138 mi) from the Bavarian capital Munich, 148 km (92 mi) from the Saxon capital Dresden, and 174 km (108 mi) from the Upper Austrian capital Linz.

The closest international airport is the Vaclav Havel Airport Prague, which is 75 km (47 mi) away and one can get from there to Plzen very easily within about two hours by Prague public transport and a train/bus.

5th EEE Conference on Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing

16-22 December 2023, Agadir – Essaouira, Morocco

http://www.ieee.ma/cist23/special-invited-sessions/nlp

  • Paper Submission: May 07, 2023
  • Acceptance Notification: June 25, 2023
  • Camera-ready Submission: July 30, 2023
  • Author's Registration: September 13, 2023

The 5th IEEE Conference on "Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing: Models, Systems, Data and Applications" will be held within IEEE CiSt'23 Congress, the week of December 16th – 22nd 2023, Agadir - Essaouira, Morocco.

The MNLP conference aims to explore and debate the latest technical status and recent innovations trends in the research and applications of natural language processing and machine learning models and technologies. The purpose of the conference is to provide an opportunity for the leading academic scientists, researchers, engineers, industrialists, scholars and other professionals from all over the world to interact and exchange their new ideas and research outcomes in related fields and develop possible chances for future collaboration. The conference is also aimed at motivating the next generation of researchers to promote their interests in machine learning and NLP.

NLP technologies and digital resources such as lexical databases, ontologies and corpora are instrumental to millions of people who use them every day without even being aware of them. Systems like Google Translate and web search engines rely more and more on levels of linguistic information automatically provided through NLP tools, and on huge repositories of structured language data. This development has deeply affected the way we think about language from a scientific perspective. Linguists have progressively turned their focus from abstract properties of language to the dynamics of its usage in communicative contexts. There is increasing awareness that language digital repositories, technologies and computational models of language processes not only shed considerable light on traditional issues in language and literary studies but may also lead to a radical reconceptualization of them. Aspects of language acquisition, lexical access, speech recognition, text translation, text analysis, ontology extraction, reading and optical character recognition can be put to a rigorous empirical test through computer simulations. Likewise, corpora, lexical databases and ontologies have helped us focus on the nature of language data from a different perspective. From this standpoint, digital data and computer technologies provide an empirical middle ground where interdisciplinary insights can be empirically assessed and integrated.

This conference is therefore equally intended to explore and debate the contribution of computational language models and language data to a better understanding of linguistic, psycholinguistic, sociolinguistic, historical and literary issues of the language and culture. We particularly welcome contributions addressing fundamental aspects of NLP, communication technology, language resources and automated text analysis by looking at their implications for both state-of-the-art language technologies and language knowledge at large.
