My dear Marczi

I received your nice long letter of the 8th of May – I am glad to hear that there is better news about your son^[1] – please arrange for me to get the issue of Pesti Hírlap – in which my painting entitled ‘The First Washing Lesson’ [11561] appeared^[2] – We are well – this weekend Lucy and I are going to stay with friends in the country for two days^[3]  – while there we will go the the Duke of Norfolk for lunch on Sunday^[4] – I painted his father, the late Duke of Norfolk [4525], 25 years ago – Then on my way to Paris on the 23rd – I’m invited to the Dowager Queen of Belgium for two days^[5] – don't mention this to anyone – I’ll probably be painting the young King^[6] – I will be in Paris for 8-10 days – and will be the guest – of an extremely wealthy American woman – who lives there – whom I am going to paint [possibly 111349] and who is staying in the château of King Louis XV of France – which is beautiful – She has already arranged a luncheon in my honour – at which the American Ambassador^[7] will be present – I will visit my friends – and the Salon, where two of my paintings have been put on show with great success [6164][4019] – Lucy will come for a few days towards the end of my stay – there was a great ceremonial presentation of my

portrait of General Pershing [6888], which the American community in Paris has given to the Palace of the Legion d’Honneur. My paintings here will take a rest for a while – I shall be away for two weeks – I wonder if you received the four copies of the art journal ‘Sketch’ with my portrait in it? – the academy here won’t be very happy about my paintings being published just now – the academy is very mediocre – I’ll write more about it next time. Reply to me here without delay – Let me now mention that Henry^[8] will be arriving in Pest around the 3rd of June – book him a small room with bath in a good hotel in Pest – perhaps along the Danube – he will be very busy. Arrange for him to visit Szerén – Elza – Ilonka,^[9] just once with whole family either at Szerén’s – or at Gábor's for dinner^[10] – and let him have the rest of the time to himself – he is not to meet any other member of the family – and make sure that the newspapers don’t write about his visit – he does not want it to be an ‘official’ visit – otherwise all kinds of wretches would flock to him to beg – You should take a taxi to the museum – but don’t visit Petrovich^[11] – then show him the house on Pálma Street where he was born, and his window too – I'll write to Bárczy,^[12] he’s the only person

he [Henry] will go to visit – and I’ve asked him to show Henry the Prime Minister’s Palace and my portraits there – go with him to the Parliament too – His meeting with the family should be in their homes, not in public places. Go with him – to the opera but don’t parade him about in Pest – he will give a lecture at the University of Bonn and visit various universities – and he will visit the electrical factory in Pest – etc. – I have sent Szerén a good copy of a painting I painted in 1918 of Lucy, Henry and myself [10491] – also a nice charcoal drawing of our dear mother^[13] – I will write to her now – I send the money – for them – perhaps she will give one of them to Ilonka – – – Why are you changing your apartment?

The Queen of Spain^[14] came to see us today – with her mother, Princess Beatric [sic]^[15] – because I am painting her son’s wife [3183]^[16] – I have such a lot to do before I leave – I’ll write more next time –

So please make sure all goes well with Henry and that he won’t be pestered

május 8 karol k. kimerítő leveledet vettem – örvendek hogy fiadról jobb hírek jönnek – kérlek intézkedjél hogy a Pesti Hírlap azon számát kapjam – melyben az első mosás czímű képem [11561] jelent meg – Mi jól vagyunk – magam Lucymel – e hét végén barátokhoz két napra falura megyünk – mialatt a norfolki hercegnél [4525] leszünk Vasárnapon ebédre – atyját a boldogult Norfolki herczeget 25 évvel ezelőtt festettem – azután 23-án útban Párisba – két napra megvagyok hívva az özvegy Belga királynőhöz erről ne szólj senkinek – úgy hiszem a fiatal királyt fogom festeni – Párisba 8–10 napig leszek – s vendége leszek – egy ott élő – rendkívül gazdag amerikai nőnél – a kit festeni fogok s a ki 15. Lajos franczia király kastélyába lakik – mely gyönyörű – máris ebédet rendezett tiszteletemre melyen az amerikai nagykövet lesz jelen – Ezalatt látni fogom barátaimat – s a Salont melyben két képem van nagy sikerrel – Lucym tartózkodásom vége felé jönn néhány napra – nagy ünnepéllyel adta at az amerikai

el fog menni – s kértem mutassa meg a miniszterelnöki Palotát s arczképeimet – menj el vele a Parlamentbe is – a családdal – a lakásokban találkozon nem nyilványos helyeken. magad menj el vele – az operába de ne mutasd Pesten – Bonni egyetemen felolvasást tart s különböző egyetemeket fog meglátogatni – továbbá a villanyos gyárat Pesten – etc.– Szerénnek küldtem egy jó copiát azon képemről melyet 1918–ban rólam Lucy – róla festettem – továbbá egy szénrajzot kedves anyánkról – most írok neki is – s küldöm a pénzt – a számákra – talán az egyiket Ilonkának fogja adni – – – vajjon miért – változod lakásodat?

Ma volt nálunk a spanyol királynő – Beatric herczegnő anyjával – mert fiának nejét festem mielőtt elindulok rengeteg sok a dolgom – jövőre többet –

Tehát kérlek intézkedjél hogy Henryvel minden jól menjen s hogy ne legyen molesztálva

‘St. Ives Picture Wins de Laszlo Medal’, Western Daily Press, 12 May 1934

A general meeting of the Royal Society of British Artists has, by vote, made the following awards in connection with the spring exhibition:–

The de Laszlo silver medal to Miss Dorothy Sharp^[18] for a picture called “Summer, St. Ives.”

The de Laszlo bronze medal to Miss Constance Bradshaw^[19] for a picture called “Near Gunnerside.”
