Updates and Reminders for the week ending August 23

This Week We…

Math:  We started our first Eureka Module, working on the beginnings of multiplication.

ELA:
We will begin our first Fundations unit, reviewing closed syllables, glued sounds, and learn some closed-syllable exceptions.  Students will also take the beginning of year i-Ready Reading Diagnostic, and research plants and animals that can be found in different zones of the ocean.

Science/ Social Studies: learned about the properties of matter and did activities with gasses.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL):   talked about what identity means and how we have different kinds of identities based on our family, our community, and our heritage.

Next Week We Will…

Math: We will begin looking at division, building on what we learned with our multiplication models.

ELA:
We will examine books and art for our first module of Wit and Wisdom (The Sea).  Students will participate in a “book tasting” to build interest. Students will ask and answer questions about a poem, “The Sea Wind” .  We will work together to determine the poem’s central message.  Next week, we will also work to determine the central idea in Hokusai’s woodblock print, The Great Wave.  We will review nouns and verbs and explain how they function in a sentence.  In Fundations, we will continue working in Unit 1 and reviewing closed syllables and closed syllable exceptions.

Science/ Social Studies: learn about how matter changes states.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL): talk about what it feels like to belong. We will begin to discuss and value our classmates’ similarities and differences.  This discussion supports our Statement of Inclusivity.
