Hi bowlers,
By now many of you would have seen the target mat we are introducing for bowlers to:
(a)Conduct a self-assessment of their competencies.
And, when used with a Coach marking and observing.
(b) Gain a more detailed analysis of their particular execution of, stance, biomechanics, delivery technique, line, weight control etc.
It is suggested that 40 bowls be delivered (10 ends of 4 bowls) alternating between forehand and backhand.
I note that the assessment format does not replicate pennant conditions in regard to the time between delivering each bowl and the compression of 42 bowls in 11 ends, however the time constraints in assessing 42 bowls over 21 ends is impractical for this purpose, nonetheless, bowlers should be encouraged to undertake the 42 bowl test over 21 ends on their own time (perhaps more than once pre-season and also during the pennant season).
Details for how bowls should be marked are as below, and specific scoring cards will be made available.

Short: Any bowl shorter than 600mm (1 mat length) from the front of the target mat.
Narrow: Any bowl crossing the head in front of the jack (Centre of the zone labelled 3) and finishing outside any scoring zone.
Long: any bowl past the rear end of the target mat.
Wide: any bowl past the jack on the same side as delivered which would otherwise have been in any scoring zone.
The mat is now available for all to try. We will be formally introducing it for bowlers to test with observation by coaches on September 1st from 12.30 pm, this coincides with the Invitation day being run by Jeff ‘Chuckles ‘Falkiner.
All bowlers are encouraged to view the information on the website under the ‘Coaching Information’ Tab, this resource contains a broad range of material to help bowlers increase their knowledge and skills.
I would particularly recommend that all bowlers read through the Practice Routines as this outlines a comprehensive set of simple drills for bowlers of all skill levels to undertake and measure their own progress.
We are fortunate to have 6 coaches with extensive knowledge and experience, these coaches are available to enable and assist all bowlers whether social or pennant to achieve the competency they wish to achieve in line with the traits peculiar to each individual, so if you are looking to develop your game please seek out one of the coaching panel to help you get your game to where you want it.
