Updates and Reminders for the week ending 9.13.24

This Week We…

Math: Students used a measuring tape as a number line to add and subtract, using “benchmark” numbers to make big jumps!  We solved comparison problems using a number line, and students also finished the mid-module assessment for Module 1!

ELA:
We continued the text “The Little Yellow Leaf”.  Students wrote a paragraph answering the question “How does the Little Yellow Leaf change?” Students began using the transition words in their paragraphs: first, next, finally, as well as adding a topic sentence.

Phonics:  Students finished Unit 2, reviewing the “glued” sounds, which are sounds that keep their individual sound but are welded together and are not separated.  Students took the Unit 2 Fundations assessment.

Science/ Social Studies: We began our new unit in Social Studies, Me on the Map!

Social Emotional Learning (SEL): We began celebrating National Hispanic Month!

Next Week We Will…

Math: We will be bundling straws into friendly groups of ones, tens, and hundreds!  Students will also use counting strategies to solve “add to with change unknown” word problems.

ELA:
We will start a new story “A color of his own”.  Students will be able to answer the question “How does the chameleon change?” using evidence from the text.

Phonics:  Students will start Unit 3 in Fundations, focusing on exceptions to the closed syllable rule: words that end in -old, -ild, -ind, -olt, -and -ost.  Trick words this unit: done, goes, pretty, where, who.

Science/ Social Studies: We will continue our “Me on the Map” unit.  Students will be able to determine and locate their city/county, state, country, continent, and finally planet.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL): Continuing our learning of Hispanic Month, students will read the first picture book writing by a DACA Dreamer, Areli Morales.  She tells in her own words her powerful immigration story.

Moments to Celebrate!

We wanted to celebrate this week making it half way through our 1st quarter of 2nd grade!  Students are working hard in each subject, and we had a blast celebrating our grade level in our Imagination Day!

We Need Your Help
