Hello to our Whanau and Friends

This newsletter takes us to the end of the year. Amazing. Every new year gives all of us the chance to start the year afresh and we look forward to working with and supporting the learning of our Room 10/11 students.

Firstly we would like to acknowledge our Year 6 students who leave this year. We were witness to a special moment on Thursday at our Year 6 morning Tea. Students were invited to speak to their fellow Year 6 group and staff members. Some of our students spoke with passion about their time at Frankley. You would have been very proud of them just as we were.

Secondly we would like to recap some of the events and learning in our rooms.

Some extra events this year have included:

Camp: Te Wera

AWE Water Safety

Interschool: Many sporting and support opportunities were offered in Term 2.

Year 6 young leaders trip An early start for Mrs Hughes and Mrs McAllister, 4.30am start and return to school at 7.30.

Bike Safety Course

First Aid course

Year 5/6 disco

Year 6 Morning Tea with Staff

Room 10/11 Big day out

We have been proud of our WIT tasks we have actioned this year. These are designed to bring out real learning for our students with a strong focus on the essence of a particular learning area. Science WITs involve our students learning and using the scientific method. WITs with a strong Technology focus involve our students using and learning about the design model. We are proud of the teacher design of these units along with the curriculum rigor they hold.

These units are designed for our students to work in small groups. This promotes those collaborative skills essential for the future. It is a time where our students use their literacy skills for an authentic reason along with a time to engage and develop the cross competency skills and learning attitudes.

WITS ( The Wildly Important Task that forms the basis of the learning) this year have included:

Health - Save a Mate - first aid focus

Health and PE - students co-constructed these with their teachers, some involved small groups and some involved individuals

Technology - Innovative Products - focus on design

Science - Light Me Up - focus on understanding chemical reactions in batteries

While home learning has not been set each week we have had an expectation our parents support our students with basic fact knowledge in maths and to promote and support regular reading. Other goals may have been shared for individual children.

Our students do have blogs and we have encouraged you to support your child by positively commenting on their posts. We hope over time the blogs will build a picture of some of the Learning Journey while your child is at Frankley School.

Learning with Digital technology is a strong feature in our rooms. It is important to note the technology supports your child in their learning. Technology is a tool and can be used in many different ways to enhance learning.

We have invited you into our classrooms and while understanding for many of you this is tricky with work commitments, we do appreciate those who have spent time with us. This allows you to see first hand how our classrooms promote learning.

S.L.C.s (Student Led Conferences) are designed to encourage your child to share their learning journey to enhance outcomes for them. Parents and caregivers have been invited to meet with us at any time for a catch up. We will continue to welcome these opportunities in 2016.

We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful holiday. Farewell to our Year 6s and Year 5 students who are moving on.

We look forward to seeing many of you at the final assembly.

2016 is set to be another exciting year, it was lovely to meet our 2016 children last week.

Please do remember to send your child along dressed to support our Christmas Cheer day and send along a can of food. More information here.
