Lady Lever Art Gallery Report

How popular is the Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight, can he gauged from the fact, noted in the Trustees second annual report, that 217,210 persons visited the collection during the period 1924-5 alone. Since the gallery was opened in 1922, by H.R.H. the Princess Beatrice, nearly 430,000 people have been to the gallery, while over 35,000 paid their tribute of respect to the late Lord Leverhulme during his lying-in-state. Recent gifts to the gallery include a portrait of the late Lord Lcverhulme (presented by himself), painted by Mr. P. A. de Lazlo [sic] [6043]; a bust in bisque of Charles Dickens (presented by Mr. J. Rochelle Thomas), and a Ming wreath in kingfisher work, ornamented with pearls and precious stones (presented by Mr. John Hilditch in memory of Lord Lcverhulme). Mr. Hilditch gave a series of lectures on Chinese pottery from the Hsia to the T’ang Dynasty, while another interesting series was that inaugurated by the Curator, Mr. Sydney L. Davison, on Sunday evenings, a feature which is being continued this autumn. The Trustees hope to arrange for early publication of a catalogue of the collection. In the meantime Mr. C. Reginald Grundy’s illustrated guide is showing increased popularity, 5,609 copies having been sold during the period under review. It is noted that the Adam room has been completed and arranged with painted furniture of the time.
