BlackBerry 10 Tips and Tricks



  1. After BB OS 10.2.1 use the Picture Password feature to unlock your device.  The setting is under security / device password.   You select a picture and a number.  You then select the location of that number on the picture.  Example:  The number 4 on the small yellow shell in the lower right corner.    To unlock the phone you are presented the picture with a grid of numbers.  Find the number 4 and move it to the correct location to unlock.  

  1. You can take a screenshot by holding down the volume buttons simultaneously, however it will only capture and save the image if Balance is locked even if you are in the Personal Perimeter

  1. In addition to having the ability to zoom in and out while using the camera (pinch to zoom), we have also incorporated that capability into the video camera as well.  

  1. There are 2 ways to make the Keyboard disappear. One which many of you may know is to hold down the Space Bar. The other way is to swipe down with 2 fingers from the top of the Keyboard.  

  1. To reset the hub. Move finger down from top right corner to center of screen several times.

  1. Show the email address of the sender. Open the email put your finger on the name and hold until option bar with the three icons comes in from the right.  Once it is there, tap in the black above the icons, but not on the icons.  The email address will appear

  1. To get more details about your contacts, open the contacts app, swipe down from the top and click settings. Scroll down to the bottom and check the box that refers to gathering more information about your contacts from the cloud.

  1.  A quick way to manually lock or unlock Balance. From either the Hub, Active Tile Screen, or the Application Grid screen, swipe down from the top which brings down menu options. The briefcase will show if balance is locked or unlocked. Just tap the briefcase and not the word balance and it will lock it if it was unlocked or it will prompt you to unlock it, if it was locked.  

  1. Within any app, when you are playing music tap the volume key. This launches a pop-up on the screen which allows you to skip tracks.

  1. To change your default search engine, open your browser and start typing into the address bar (but don't hit enter). On the top right of the screen you will see a small magnifying glass show up. Click on that and select your preferred search engine.

  1. When in the Hub, you can filter email by unread, flagged, date etc. by tapping the search, and then tap the menu icon in the upper left next to the search box which will display the various options for searching and filtering messages.
  2. When you bring up the text navigation bubble, you can drag it around to position the cursor though this may be a bit difficult in some instances. You can also just tap it on the left, right, top or bottom to move the cursor individually over one character.
