The Ninth World Turns Recap #006 - Queb Keepers
Campaign Day 001
XP: Everyone has 1 xp from discovering the machine
Daks lead the way into the courtyard, just in time to see two furry serpentine creatures unfurl from metal cages. Each one had slitted eyes locked on Daks. They appeared to be about Six feet in length, with heads that prominently featured sharp ears, a protruding muzzle with whiskers, and a mouthful of sharp fangs bared in preparation for combat.
Behind the beasts stood two heavily armored guards, with shield, spear, and thick armor that clearly saw lots of use while training these beasts.
The sounds of the party coming through the hallway must have triggered the opening of the cages. But the animals had barely made it out of the cage by the time the speed-enhanced group entered the yard.
Jay Zin reached out towards Mechanus and felt the energy discharge from the ring shaped cypher he had been wearing... Unfortunately For Jay Zin he hadn't touched Mechanus yet.
Mechanus saw that the young man was bothered by his presence. His mind trying to figure out whether he knew him or whether he was hunting him. Whatever it was, it was not good. And things got worse. Quickly.
The nano was able to avoid the glowing ring-shaped cypher. Mechanus did not want to know what it was but it looked bad.
"Wow, wow. What have I done to you? I'm not your enemy." Am I?
Mechanus put a couple of people between him and Jay Zin while he battled the guards and beasts. "Great. As if lion-headed snakes weren't bad enough.
Daks eyes widened. Uh oh. Thought Daks. He was beginning to wish he had let the Diruk take the lead. what are these things? Oh god, what have I gotten myself into. Daks didn't look scared. He had trained for situations like this. But he had only been a glaive for a few year and if anyone was paying attention they may have noticed a flicker of apprehension cross Daks' face. However, he was not about to be deterred. Stepping forward and, remembering how nervous his party looked just a moment earlier, Daks steeled himself. Welp, you wanted to impress them. Time to put your money where your mouth is. With his shield before him, and sword raised high Daks let out a shout. Bring it! Ready action to strike the first enemy to come in range using Goad. Attack: 1d20 ⇒ 16
Hits against Queb1 - 4 damage (including shock) plus Goad Effect - note: please remind me of shock or describe an electric effect in each attack.
Basai
Cages were being opened... they were releasing whatever monster of the month Mintz was collecting but before Basai could say anything to that effect, the young human Daks dashed ahead. The Diruk vented a puff of steam that could very well be called exasperated and followed after. Shi was a giant shield, capable of taking a great deal of punishment, and shi was determined to buffer whatever came at this group but if they sprinted past hir, it was going to be difficult. Perhaps Daks was better at this than shi expected? Shi hoped so.
Before them the training yard opened up into a square space and it was not the creatures that first grabbed the Diruk's attention, it was the two armored trainers to either side. Hir crystals flickered deep crimsons and vermillions as shi moved forward, hands out to the sides in a combat position. Shi puffed out great gouts of steam and ground hir feet into the soil in an attempt to distract the guards. They'd tried 'training' hir once... it hadn't gone well for anyone involved and they'd never tried it again. Shi only hoped they remembered the last time they'd forced hir into this space.
The tables were turned, as far as Basai was concerned, and shi loathed these men in the armor and their pointy spears that could find cracks in hir hide. Shi did not care too much about the creatures - they were as much enslaved as shi had been and were probably only being goaded to be vicious... no, it was the Armored Guards who bore the brunt of Basai's aggression. Shi stomped hir foot, causing the ground to shake, and put a dent in the soil. Remember me? shi seemed to be asking them.
I’m using the auto-succeed rules on page 101 - Take the Attack for this. I will allow the guards to be “taunted” by this action but not the Quebs.
Jay Zin
To Mechanus Jay said You're lucky... but I'll be watching you... he then Turned his attention to the new opponents in the next room... Pulling a dagger he threw the weapon at the closest of the fuzzy snakes, more concerned about hitting then maximizing damage.
Pierce: 1d20 ⇒ 3 we’re fast, they're slow, using a light weapon... and free asset from initiative.
Hits Queb 2 for 2 damage - Automatic Success with four assets
Azzuretta looked at the new creatures with interest... not only did they not have wings... they didn't have legs. The xi-drake waited for one of them to come closer and attack her allies then moved into place to attack one herself.
bite: 1d20 ⇒ 16
Hits Queb2 for 1 damage - Also applies High and Low effect - pg. 101
Mechanus did not need to know that those things were bad. He felt it.
He looked behind him to see that he was not going to be corralled in the hallway and decided to stay put.
He did maneuver to get a better shot. His brain put a red dot on the head of one the beast and before he knew it, a thin red ray connected from his open palm to the red dot on the animal's head.
It left a scorching mark on the forehead.
onslaught: 1d20 ⇒ 18, 6 damage - armor
Hits Queb2 for 5 damage
Breona
Exotic animals. Go figure. Is that a snake? Were those fangs? With racing heart, Breona gazed at the animals across the yard, as always easily fascinated. This time however she was able to quickly shake it off. Her newfound companions were ready and moved to attack or distract the guards and the strange snake-cat-whatever creatures, and so was Breona. She stepped out of the hallway into the yard proper and aimed her crossbow at the closest of the dangerous looking animals, hoping that her aim would be true, her hands not shaking too much.
Pierce: 1d20 ⇒ 11
Hits Queb1 for 4 damage
The Quebs advanced first, moving in direct lines to the creatures closest. One could taste the fear of the young human on his tongue. The Queb eagerly approached, only to receive a stinging blow from a forked sword. The human will pay for that. The other Queb approached the moving rock, not having fought a creature like this before, the beast took a cautious approach. The rock appeared to be shouting at the guards, and the queb slithered right up to hir hoping hir attendions were focused elsewhere. A crossbow bolt from Breona and a dagger thrown from Jay Zin both struck true against the Queb, and were quickly followed up by a snip from the drake creature. The combination of ranged and melee attacks puts the beast off-guard. (High and Low, pg.101)
The guard approached following the beasts and were clearly preparing to subdue the rock. The Quebs were poised to strike at their foes as well. <The enemies used their action round for movement>
