World Championships

November 2015

Dovetailing with the Juniors event, the Womens 2015 World Championships got under way in Bangkok, Thailand on the 4th of November with East Midlands eyes firmly on our very own Lisa

With team mates Myra, Sarah and Kim, Lisa had won the English Pétanque Association’s qualifying competition at Whitnash Windmill PC back in August 2014. Team Manager Tony was until recently Secretary of the National Association

Rather like the Juniors, the Women got off to a shaky start with losses to China and Thailand on the first day. Once again fingernails back here in the UK took a pounding. We weren’t to know that a completely different story was about to unfold

Hope, belief and determination were rewarded on Day 2 - and a procession of wins against Latvia, Algeria and Norway took the England Women into 16th place and the favoured top half of the draw for the Knockout stages. When an unkind draw pitched them against Italy, they beat them anyway, 13 - 10. More bad luck had them facing Thailand for a place in the last 8. This time it was not to be. After a heroic two and a half hour ‘marathon’ the Thais edged it 13 - 8

The last word comes from Manager Tony:

“One of my best and proudest days of petanque … Thanks to you all for an amazing team performance and some fantastic memories”
