Tell us about yourself:

I am an art educator dedicated to storytelling through visual media. I enjoy drawing and photography, but I also love working with other artists on shared visions. I love to guide my students through the creative process and I look forward to learning their stories. I was born and raised in Charlotte, NC. I believe in the South, and I miss it when I am away. I received my BFA from UNCA and my MFA from Burren College of Art in Ireland. I teach Digital Photography and Visual Art at Renaissance School of Arts and Technology as well as Art Appreciation for CPCC. I have two small children, a husband, and an ancient cat.

Project Summary:

I teach Digital Photography at Renaissance School of Arts and Technology (part of the Olympic High School community of schools). In my class I would like to teach portrait photography with a selfie twist. My students are constantly taking photos of themselves, but not really reflecting on what images they are putting into the world. We will study the self portrait through art history and in present practice. I will have students then reflect on who they are, what they want to say about themselves, and where they see themselves in the future.

I will then project the images on to three outdoor spaces over the span of a weekend. The students will decide where they want to project their images, and how they want to market these images. These images will truly be out in the world, and the students will have control over the production, distribution, and audience.

Of course we’d have to get parental waivers for any student who appears in photographs or shows photographs, but I’m hoping our parents would see the benefits of this project.

How will you use Queen City Soup grant funding for your project?

EOS Rebel T5 18-55mm IS II Kit (1)                                   $399

Rental of large format projector                                 $400

8x10 print for each student.                                               $136

Any remaining funds would go to instructor stipend for the weekend shows

TOTAL: 935

Why does this project matter to the Charlotte community?

The Renaissance School of Arts and Technology is working to educate our students through real-world experiences. This project teaches High School students about photography and technology while also teaching the soft skills of communication, collaboration, and project management. Our students need to benefit from the interactions with an authentic audience while showcasing their artistic skills.

What is the time frame for your project and how will you share updates with us as things progress?

My class will begin outlining the project in September. The photographs will be taken over the course of the school year.  Throughout the project the students will maintain a blog of photographs documenting their work as well as critiquing and improving their work.

Proposal 2 - Micheal.h

Oliver Lewis

Tell us about yourself:

I'm a nationally exhibited artist who presents his mind in both the right and left hemispheres, by inventing new art mediums with math, science, and robotics. I study Engineering at Penn State University but found that my life wasn't complete until I started working as an artist. Eventually I was invited into the McColl Center for Visual Art + Innovation's Artist-In-Residency Program and afterwards worked as an Artist-In-Residence at the Levine Children's Hospital.

Project Summary:

"Micheal.h" is a class being developed under the Community School of the Arts to teach the fundamentals of computer programing by using robots to paint pictures. The robot moves over a canvas in 3-dimensions and a holds mechanism that turns and angles a paint brush similarly to a human hand. Students will first learn to create basic shapes and concepts so they can freely express their imagination and then more advance techniques of automation. Teaching them the essentials of computer programing so they can take those skills to other development platforms.

How will you use Queen City Soup grant funding for your project?

The funds will be used to construct 4 robots. It will afford us in buying materials such as framing aluminum, electric motors, and computer circuitry.  Each robot costs ~$250.

Why does this project matter to the Charlotte community?

The problem that Micheal.h addresses is not unique to Charlotte but one as a nation, computer literacy is not at a level which meets the overall demand. However, the openness of Charlotte allows us to address this problem. Already, an organization such as the Community School of the Arts is willing to lend their support and facilities to pilot a new idea and technology. I personally think its success there and Charlotte's culture of openness will allow it to gain the traction it needs to move into our local school system.

What is the time frame for your project and how will you share updates with us as things progress?

The robots are designed to withstand several years use. However as soon as funding is made available to us, the construction of 2 robots will take place lasting around 2 weeks. During this time videos about constructing the robots will be shared on social media. There will also be dedicated website to host all the information, design plans, and computer code where everyone can access it for free.

El alma de la Luna is one of the most experienced dance companies in the Charlotte area. We strive to teach our students the beauty of the art in motion, and encourage them to give the best of themselves as we have fun in each and every class. Our 10 years in the art has made possible for our students to perform in many different stages and festivals. We have won championships as an academy and our students have been able to experience, and appreciate the discipline and the beauty in dancing. Our satisfaction is to share our passion with our students; We believe our legacy is extensively expressed through them in every move and in every choreography.

Project Summary:

Our Annual dance Recital represents Latin American and Spanish Couture thru dance

also we have a Christmas Celebration in our second half of the show. we encourage the preservation of culture but we also like to show a fusion of cultures in our performance.

How will you use Queen City Soup grant funding for your project?

Dance Costumes.

in order to keep out Dance tuition low and provide with a professional and high quality dance performance, El Alma de la Luna provides with Dance costumes for all dancers. We have families in the studio with two or three family members taking classes and paying dance costumes for each dancers it's just not possible due to the high price of any dance supply.

Why does this project matter to the Charlotte community?

Dance, like music and other arts, has many benefits for mental and intellectual development of children. According to several studies, children taking dance classes tend to be more successful academically than children who do not take dance classes.

In fact, some experts in the field of education have realized that children who have dance experience tend to do better in school tests and competitions in math and science.

Dance helps children develop key skills to succeed academically. It helps them to develop their powers of concentration and discipline, and spark your creativity.

100% of our Dancers that have been with us for Dance education have graduated from High school and now pursuing a College degree.

What is the time frame for your project and how will you share updates with us as things progress?

The deadline to get Dance costumes is on November 1th so we can have everything ready by December 6th, some costumes must be altered to fit special sizes and dancer's needs, we would provide with an inventory of the dance costumes we are able to get with this special grant, send pictures and videos of dance rehearsals.
