N.W.3.

Dear Sir,

I beg to thank you for your letter of the 3rd inst.[1]

You will recollect I wrote and asked what your fee would be for painting a picture of my daughter [6859],[2] and your Secretary replied and named two sums, – the larger being £500.[3]

I of course understand that a full length portrait would cost more than the sum quoted by your Secretary; but I regret, –  much as I wish to be guided by you in the matter, and much as I desire to possess a painting by you, –  I cannot possibly afford (in these times of high taxation etc.) to pay more than 1,000 guineas.

I wish I had been informed sooner of the contents of your letter, so that I could have saved you so much trouble. As it is, I will endeavour to do anything you think fair in the matter.

Yours faithfully,

Arthur Bendir
