The Hook - Climbing the Math Fact Ranks

Once upon a time, there was a Royal British family.  This monarchy from United Kingdom was looking for new members.  The king, queen, prince, and princess were looking for new members to join their hierarchy.  They have been looking all around the world… east and west throughout ALL the continents.  During their travels, they kept hearing that the best students are found RIGHT HERE at GENERAL ROSECRANS ELEMENTARY!  Is that right?!?  Well… you all have a chance to become part of the GRE’s Royal Family!  The highest members of the Royal British monarchy all agree that knowing addition and subtraction math facts are EXTREMELY important.  Knowing these facts will get you very far in life.  Soooooo as you learn math facts this year, you will “climb the ranks” to become part of the GRE’s Royal Family.  

The good news is… You are all on your way!  You have your “Learning Path” to help you through this exciting journey.  And the best part is you have your “Math Family” to support you.  You will be COLLABORATING with them by playing games and doing hands on activities.  Every Thursday, we will have a “Kings Club Celebration” to show how many math facts you know!  Not only will you “climb the ranks”, but your Math Family will earn points.  These points will be very important, because all the Math Families on our Second Grade team will be battling one another.  Every Friday the points will be displayed in our hallway to show how your Math Family is doing in the battle.  Also, the Second Grade classes will be competing against one another!  Who will win?!?  More to come on prizes during the year… and the final winner at the end of the year!!!

Now let’s talk about the RANKS!!!  (Display “Climbing the Math Facts Ranks”).  We all start out as COMMONERS.  These are ordinary people that are not considered royalty YET.  We are commoners as we learn to master the addition facts.  No worries… as you learn and improve the amount addition facts you know, you will receive points.  BUT when you master 50/50 addition facts in 3 minutes, you will begin to become a member of GRE’s Royal Family!  (Continue to explain ranks and points.)
