PREFACE

The “DB DOC” was intended as a Dual Blade primer for players with some knowledge of MapleStory. Here, you’ll find how to set up and play the class, relevant skills and items, immediate priorities, and additional resources.

Besides Cooldown Reduction, you won’t find in-depth explanations and numbers here. If you’re interested in those details, links to our Discords will be provided.

Dual Blade by Tummy, Reboot Secret Garden

Edited by Rosebuds

Dual Blade (DB) is an Explorer Thief class that utilizes a Dagger and Katara. They deal damage constantly using Phantom Blow while cycling through 3 skills: Blade Tornado, Blades of Destiny, and Haunted Edge. Lastly, Dual Blade bursts every 60 seconds using Blade Storm and Asura's Anger.

SWEETWATER KATARA

May opt for Arcane Umbra Katara (-2% FD) due to rarity and price of SW Kataras.

Sweetwater (SW) Katara is Dual Blade’s best-in-slot Sub Weapon, offering 10% IED and 30% Boss Damage. It drops from bosses during Commerci Solo Voyages and Party Quests (CPQ). This Katara can be min-maxed further through Transposing, resulting in Attack Power +4, DEX +11, and LUK +11.

Blade Storm

It’s a very short keydown skill. It’s gotten so short that it might as well be an instant cast. This is the most anti-Dual Blade skill as you’re pretty much stuck to the floor. Blade Storm, frankly, is just a big button. That’s all.

V

Blade Tornado

Blade Tornado has 2 stages. Upon activation, it will briefly surround and follow you.

Then, the tornado will shoot a short distance towards where you were last facing. When both stages of Blade Tornado land properly, it hits 86 times.

Created using Mirror Image and Syncroid, Rosebuds

Due to the awkward nature (pun intended) of Blade Tornado, you will need to mind your spacing. Assuming the Boss is large, the sweet spot for casting is about -1 to 2 character heads away from its silhouette or within these red lines (above).

Blades of Destiny

Is this cultural appropriation?

V

Blades of Destiny

Blades of Destiny (BoD) is almost a true FMA due to its 5 Chase Cut Activations. Basically, the skill activates FIVE TIMES!

After it fades away, Blades of Destiny continue to attack for some time. When you move during this, the cuts chase you. Get it?

What’s actually happening is, the Chase Cut Activations are a workaround to prevent hitting the damage line cap. This enables Dual Blade to FMA while using portals—neat!

Blades of Destiny is the skill for Training. The other skills cover where it can’t reach.

Dual Blades acquire new Passive Attack Procs which are additional attacks that occur when certain conditions are met.

Haunted Edge

Haunted Edge

Haunted Edge (HE) is an extra attack that follows after either a Phantom Blow (HE-Yaksa) or a Blade Fury (HE-Asura). Afterwards, it goes on cooldown. You can track when it’s available by slotting HE in your Buff Favorites.

V

Haunted Edge Yaksa

HE-Yaksa is an afterimage of strikes meant for bossing. This proc is server-sided, so there is a slight delay before it appears. This lends itself to likely whiffing a mobile target.

Blink and Haunted Edge-Asura

V

Haunted Edge Asura

HE-Asura is for mobbing. It shoots homing blades (not shown) towards multiple targets. These blades do much less damage if they land on the same target.

For the most damage in either solo or party play, Dual Blades need to Ring Swap between Oz Rings: Ring of Restraint (ROR) for their Full Burst and Weapon Jump L Ring (WJ) for their Mini Burst.

You can do this either by opening your Inventory interface and Double-clicking another ring or using Character Presets.

MapleStory Character Presets Guide, YouTube, TajMaJon

Continuous Ring

You can forgo this entirely by opting for a Continuous Ring (CONT), which doesn’t need to be swapped, but this is weaker.

I wouldn’t throw away your CONT rings, but in the near future, GMS should get a “Ring Swapping” skill which should make swapping much more convenient.

Ring Activation

To use an OZ Ring, be sure to key bind Ring Activation, NOT the OZ Ring Skill. Its icon will change depending on which Oz Ring you have currently equipped.

If you were to keybind ROR instead, it would disappear from your keybindings when you swap OZ Rings and you’ll be unable to activate the OZ Ring in its place.

Final Cut

iFrame Duration: 3 sec.

  • Invincibility DOES NOT register immediately!
  • Charging it does nothing.
  • Usable in the air.
  • Cooldown Skippable

Final Cut grants a Final Damage buff that should always be maintained. To free it up as an iFrame, you need either Cooldown Skip or 55%-100% Buff Duration. Any more has diminishing returns.

Charging Final Cut

DO NOT charge Final Cut as you are not invincible during this!

Final Cut Slowed

Even from a quick tap,  it’s extremely easy to start Final Cut’s charging animation which delayed the invincibility to almost half a second. Because of this, I highly recommend using it preemptively, NOT reactively.

Chains of Hell

iFrame Duration: 3 sec.

Chains of Hell provides 1.5 seconds of invincibility instantly. If you are close enough to the same target the skill hits, its second animation (“Part 2”) begins. During which, you are invincible for about 3 more seconds.

Chains of Hell cancelling Blade Tornado and triggering “Part 2”

You can also use Chains of Hell during skills, cancelling their animations. Since you can act after Blade Tornado immediately, it will resume while Chains of Hell is free to extend your invincibility.

Chains of Hell unable to trigger “Part 2” during Asura’s Anger

However, if you use Chains of Hell during a skill that locks you out of most other actions until it completes, like Asura’s Anger, you will only get the initial 1.5 seconds of invincibility. It is still possible to receive the extended invincibility during Asura’s Anger, but it’s just a moment before it ends.

  • BoD covers the LARGEST portion of the map.
  • Erda Fountain and Sol Janus: Dawn (1) covers outside of BoD’s range.

An active rotation can be as low-effort as a “lazy” one. Since you loot and attack simultaneously, you don’t have to mentally switch gears between standing still, looting, and replacing Summons.

Even in the bottom section of this map, you develop a rhythm while jumping and attacking to the other side. Here, Sol Janus: Dusk covers the mobs off-screen as you move throughout.

Common Mistakes

Placeable Summon,

Up to 3, When placing 2+,

all Rings shrink.

When creating rotations on MapleMaps using 3 rings of Sol Janus: Dawn, some players mistakenly place Sol Janus: Dawn (1) three times or Sol Janus: Dawn (1), (2), and (3) in different places. ALL the rings shrink the more you have placed on the map.
