Kia Ora,
I am writing to you of my concern about New Zealand’s stance on what is happening in Palestine. I urge you, our elected Member of Parliament and Media to condemn Israel for its blatant war crimes and recognise Palestine as a state. What is currently happening in Palestine is a genocide and New Zealand must also call for a ceasefire.
The past three weeks thousands of New Zealanders spilled into the streets and showed their solidarity for Palestine and demanding our leaders to call for a ceasefire and end the genocide. On the 21/10/23 there was a rally in Auckland for Palestine which over 5000 people attended, only for the media to say that only a couple hundred attended. It was also only recently that our government called for a ‘pause’ but that is simply not good enough and waters down the severity of the situation. There must be a call for a ceasefire.
As of 1/11//23, the Ministry of Health in Gaza said that about 8 525 had been killed since Israel declared their war. This included 3 542 children and 2 187 women civilians that were killed unjustly with more than 21 543 injured. The UN states that there are more than 1.4 million displaced with nearly 580,000 sheltering 150 UNRWA designated emergency shelters.
Israel has cut off electricity, water, and the internet to the people of Gaza. New Zealand knows this and still won't condemn Israel for its collective punishment which is a war crime. Israel has also told 1.1 million Palestinians to leave their homes and then the Israeli army bombed the road that said that it was a “safe route”. Israel has repeatedly warned hospitals to evacuate and you know this is impossible. Not only this but Israel will not allow fuel to get into Gaza which is needed to run the hospitals causing a total collapse in their health system.
You know that all of this is inhumane. You know that all of this is downright cruel. And this is why since you are our leaders and our media you have to say and do something.
Nonetheless, New Zealand must recognise Palestine as a state as it does exist, and it has existed long before Israel. Since 1948 for 75 years, Israel has been ethnically cleansing Palestinians and stealing their land. For decades Israel has constantly committed heinous war crimes and violated International Law and Human Rights without any condemnation. By not recognising Palestine we have deliberately dismissed their voices and plea for support.
Palestinians have been experiencing the most brutal and racist apartheid, military occupation, and now genocide. Gaza in Palestine is the biggest open-air prison trapping two million people of which half are children and is now being attacked by Israel which has the most sophisticated military system in the world. All of this you cannot deny as they have been investigated by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.
It is disheartening that our leaders and our media have been complicit in the killing of innocent people and the abuses of Human Rights which are done by Israel. And it is even more disheartening to see the oppressors as the victims while those being oppressed, the Palestinians be dehumanised so that the genocide can occur before our very eyes.
We cannot let any more innocent lives, especially children be killed. We cannot let this genocide prolong any further and it must end. I urge you to take action and condemn Israel and no longer support them in their heinous genocide of the Palestinians.
To finish off I would like to reiterate that New Zealand must condemn Israel, call for a ceasefire and recognise Palestine as a state.
