Types of Science Fair Projects
(Modified from https://support.projectboard.world/portal/en/kb/articles/science-day-project-types-new to include demonstration projects)
Introduction
Science fair projects come in various forms, each offering unique opportunities to explore scientific and engineering concepts. This document outlines the different types of projects you can undertake:
Understanding these categories will help you choose a project that aligns with your interests and objectives.
Hypothesis-Based Research Projects
Hypothesis-Based Research Projects follow the steps of the Scientific Method. These projects begin with a clear, testable question derived from observations. You define independent and dependent variables, design an experiment, and conduct multiple trials. Data is collected and analyzed to determine whether to accept or reject your hypothesis. Finally, you communicate your results, providing evidence to support your conclusions.
Engineering Design Projects
Engineering Design Projects address a specific engineering problem or need. You start by identifying criteria for success and any constraints. Next, you brainstorm solutions, create preliminary designs, and build a prototype. The prototype is then tested and refined based on performance. The project's success is evaluated by how effectively the prototype solves the identified problem, and results are clearly communicated.
Meta-Analysis (Big Data) Research Projects
Meta-Analysis Research Projects involve collecting, processing, and analyzing statistical data from multiple scientific studies or reports. You combine information from these sources to explore new relationships or evaluate data in a broader context. The process begins with a testable question, followed by gathering multiple published studies that address this question.
For Meta-Analysis projects, maintaining a well-documented journal is crucial. This should include background research, source data, and graphs. A comprehensive research report is also required, which includes:
Unlike other projects, Meta-Analysis does not require conducting first-hand physical experiments.
Engineering Hypothesis-Based Research Projects
Engineering Hypothesis-Based Research Projects combine elements of engineering and the Scientific Method. In these projects, you may build a device or apparatus to test a specific hypothesis. The primary purpose of the device is not to solve an engineering problem but to gather experimental data. This data is then analyzed to determine whether your hypothesis is supported.
Demonstration Projects
Demonstration Projects aim to illustrate or explain a scientific principle or phenomenon. These projects involve recreating existing experiments or demonstrations to showcase how a particular concept works. While they may not involve formulating a new hypothesis or conducting original research, Demonstration Projects are valuable for enhancing understanding and effectively communicating scientific ideas.
In Demonstration Projects, you:
Demonstration Projects are excellent for educational purposes, helping both the presenter and the audience to gain a deeper insight into scientific concepts. However, they are not eligible for district science fair.
