02 Lights realistically have a fall off or decay e.g. Linear decay. Control linear decay and intensity. Specular highlights and diffuse light can be controlled separately off/on.

03 Spot lights - Penumbra angle feathers the edges.



06 Show manipulator tool. The index manipulator switch turns on controls from the attribute editor.

07 Barn Doors on spotlights. Under light effects, turn on barn doors.

Use penumbra angle to soften the edges.

08 Ambient Light: By default this acts like a point light. This is controlled by ambient shade. Ambient light doesn’t illuminate bump maps in shadows.

09 Depth Map Shadows

Automatically acts on transparency map.Resolution determines how pixelated the shadow edge is. Filter size controls softness of edges. Resolution and filter size are related to eachother. 1024, 2048

10 Ray Trace Shadow. Turn this on under Maya Software global render settings. Shadow rays are number of rays used to calculate shadows. Shadow attenuation under material attributes at 0 will turn off shadows cast from transparency map.

11 Controlling render stats of objects

Control which objects cast shadows under render stats of object.

12 Simulating illuminated light sources in Maya

Put point light in bulb. Change render stats of bulb - turn off cast and receive shadows,

Change material to a surface shader. Add colour and glow.

13 Light and shadow linking. Shadow linking - select objects to be affected plus the light. Under lighting/shading - make shadow links, Under global render settings of Maya Software - tell shadows to obey shadow linking. In mental ray, this setting is under quality tab.

How can you animate gobo?

15 Creating volumetric light fog. Light fog is under light effects. Use depth map shadows instead of ray trace shadows. The greater the fog spread, the more uniform the light will be. Setting under depth map shadows influence fog also. Samples increase will reduce the noise.

Filter size of shadows softens edges.

  1. Creating light glows and lens flares in Maya e.g. Light glow under light effects of point light. Render in Maya sofware. Make changes within optical fx node. Modify under IPR renderer.

17. Controlling reflection and refraction depth in Maya Under quality tab of mental ray global render settings. Also need to make changes in the material - raytrace options. Max ray depth.
