Course Descriptions

ANTH 270: Special Topics in Cultural Anthropology: Spaces of Cultural and Intellectual Freedom / ANTH 305: Anthropology of Space and Place

This course explores how spaces shape and reflect cultural and intellectual freedoms. The course will meet in the Coretta Scott King Center and we will examine spatial dynamics in social justice movements and community-building efforts, both locally and globally. Through fieldwork, discussions, and collaborative projects, students will critically engage with the intersections of space, power, and identity.

LIT 250 / LIT 350: Creative Writing: Family Resemblance: A Brief Study in Flash Fiction and Flash Nonfiction

The flash form (1000 words or less) is a genre that challenges writers to distill stories down to the most important moments, the moments not seen until revealed through the writer’s unwavering attention to language and image. We can bring to life the fictional stories that hide deep in our imaginations or we can offer the world our simple, sometimes gut-wrenching, truths. Either way, the flash form is here for it and can hold whatever we give it up to the light.

IPCE 105: American Sign Language I: An Introduction to Deaf Culture

This course introduces the basics of American Sign Language (ASL) and is designed for students who have little or no previous knowledge of ASL. Readiness for learning will be approached via visual-gestural communication techniques, visual discrimination, and visual memory exercises. ASL questions, commands, and other simple sentence structures are introduced to develop rudimentary conversational skills in ASL. Information about the Deaf Community and Deaf Culture will be introduced.
