Identify the four main parts of a plant. 

What are the four main parts of a plant? 

  1. Display a picture of a plant.
  2. Have the children tell what they know about plants.
  3. Display Flip Chart page 16.
  4. Guide oral vocabulary development by asking the following questions: What are the four main parts of a plant? What part of the plant holds up the flower? What other plant  parts are attached to the plant? Which part of the plant grows in the soil?
  5. Discuss the four main parts of a plant.
  6. Have the children use picture clues and answer questions.
  7. Ask: How are the parts of this plant like the parts of a tree?
  8. Display flower pots.
  9. Have the children examine potted plants by gently removing soil so that they could observe the roots.
  10. Discuss how each part helps the plant.
  11. Have the children point to the relevant plant part as I name each one.

  1. Have the children share what they know about plants.
  2. Ask: What is a plant? What do plants look like? Where can plants grow? What are the parts of the plant?
  3. Read aloud the book and track print of “The Tiny Seed.”
  4. Review story elements.
  5. Lead the children in discussions about the various plants shown in the book.
  6. Ask: What was flying in the air? What happened to the seeds? What happened to the tiny seed? Why was she able to grow?  
  7. Open the book and identify the different parts of the plant.
  8. Ask: Why are the seeds planted in soil?
  9. Go back through the book and have volunteers point to and identify the bulbs, roots, flowers, seeds, and leaves on each page.
