Remind them that they lived in the mountains in Columbia they might not be able to go to school!

How are the Biblioburros like our library?  How are they different?

You probably won’t want to read every page.  Pick maybe 2-3 countries to read about.

Show students the copyright 2005.  Ask students how we could find out more information about mobile libraries that is more up-to-date.

Have students use ~15 minutes to research a country and see if they can find any information about mobile libraries.

How do we know this is a primary source?

Students---give every 2-3 students a primary source picture of a bookmobile.  What do they think of it?  Give them 5 minutes to talk and then share with the group what they learned about bookmobiles from the picture.

Day 4-5

McPherson USD 418 Lesson Plan Template

Learning Outcome:   Make a Mobile Library

Background Information: What is a Mobile Library.  What is a copyright date.

        Date:         November                         Subject/Grade:  4th/5th

Prerequisite Skills Needed for Learning:  n/a

        Learning Resources:

Opening -Prepare the Learner

What is your favorite mobile library?

Divide students into two groups:  Students who really like to draw and students who do not.  Pair up students so each group has two artists and two non-artists.

The job of the artists is to help design the box.  The job of the non-artist is to pick books.

Imagine you are a librarian for a mobile library.  You have to pick the best books for your library.

Two decisions:  What kind of mobile library?  (ie. what is going to carry the books?  a truck?  an elephant? a camel? )

What books will you put in your library?

What books are best?

Are you picking books just for little kids?  or older people?

Don’t pick just any books, we want good books that you recommend!!!

Pick ~5-10 books for your mobile library

CHALLENGE!!!!!!

If groups want a challenge (and give them the option) they have to pick a date and they can only pick books older than that date.

For example: A group that picks a 1990 bookmobile can only pick books from 1990 or older.  They will have to look at copyright date!

-You Do It (Independent Practice)

Give students time to work and design redirecting and questioning as necessary.

Closing - Solidify the learning

        --Review and Practice

--Celebrate : How will I affirm students’ efforts and learning

Yes, you will have a lot of books off the shelves during this time.  We will put them away over Christmas break.  Recommending books is a great activity, so we will encourage it for a short time !

Students may check out books from the bookcarts.
