Self-Portraits in Florence.
Sir William Orpen’s self-portrait, destined for the Uffizi Gallery, Florence, will be placed in distinguished artistic company when it reaches that famous storehouse of pictorial treasures. There are many portraits of this interesting class in the Uffizi, and also in the Pitti, close at hand.
Sir John Lavery’s portrait of himself on view shows him clothed in a grey overall and with tortoiseshell spectacles, the latter being also included in Orpen’s study of himself. Sargent’s portrait, done by himself, is accompanied by an inscription recording that he was born in Florence in 1856, while other who have painted themselves for hanging on the walls of the Florentine galleries include Millais, Holman, Hunt [sic], Watts, Leighton, Orchardson, Laszlo [9724], Collier, Alma Tadema, and Herkomer.
