The Ninth World Turns Recap #012 - Stop the Paint
Campaign Day 001
XP: Everyone has 1 xp from discovering the machine
Scouting ahead, Daks sees that the doors are now open and the guards are searching the bodies of two rebels on the ground. They appear to find the glow solution and start applying it to themselves. Party has about 1 minute here to heal, mess with cyphers, and prepare, etc.
Action1:
After taking Daks a minute to express the urgency to the group, everyone enters the next room & see that the guards have opened the door and killed the rebels that were left there. They have taken the glow solution and shared it amongst themselves. Guard 5 has the solution and is taking it upstairs. The party enters the room, knowing that they need to stop the solution from going upstairs and getting to the rest of the guards.
Action 2: Combat
Breona
Easily distracted, Breona marveled at the intricate insect. She held it on the flat of her palm, studying it closely. She briefly looked up when Daks rushed ahead to scout the hallway. When everyone else moved to follow him, she regretfully put the insect away and moved to follow.
Basai wasn't really much help in identifying the numenera but shi did activate the cage and lock it without destroying the mechanism. Assuming the guard was found, he'd live... if not, well... Basai didn't really care that much. Shi looked at him then puffed steam at him and pressed against the side of the cage, making it creak and wrinkle from the pressure. When shi spoke, shi tried to be as clear as possible, ”What do you know about Mintz' guards? His saferoom?”
Intimidate (Unpleasant Social Interaction): 1d20 ⇒ 8 <Roll Fail, Diff 3>
Shi remained relatively motionless for a moment, listening, then noticed hir allies were moving off and turned away, hurrying after them.
The guard grumbles, “how should I know how many of them are left? I’ve been in here.”
Daks stomach dropped as he saw a painted guard headed upstairs with a pot of paint in his hands. $#!+. That paint has given such an advantage. Without it... Daks didn't have time to finish his thought. Daks didn't hesitate. Pulling back a crackling arrow he braced himself for what came next. attack guard 5 with effort and shock. You roll effort rolls right? <Yes, but please specify effort to hit or effort to damage>
Daks w/ Effort to Damage: 1d20 ⇒ 20
Daks’ shot hit the guard closest to the stairs like a bolt of lightning. His armor and skin blackened and the tin of paint went flying straight up into the air, shocked out of his hand by the released energy of the arrow. <Guard5 dies>
Daks felt that his arrow was sure to hit as soon as he released it. He was in one of those moments of clarity, when he almost forgot he was even holding a bow. The next arrow was charged and aimed as by instinct, and he knew just where it would do the most damage. <Major Effect>+2 Step asset to next attack
Jay Zin picks up a shield and both of the spears that have been dropped by the fallen guards as well as recovers his own daggers. He takes a moment to recover himself. And scoops up one of the larger Cyphers having no idea what any of them are.
Numenera: 1d20 ⇒ 10 <Photonic Hand added to inventory.>
recovery roll: 1d6 ⇒ 1 <Recovers 1+1 From Tier 1 - Speed changes from 9/14 to 11/14>
The whole while Jay Zin tells a couple tales about people none of the characters know or have heard of. But apparently he had an unrequited crush on a girl who was the daughter of a fisherman in Ledon, and once while mucking out the Rectory where the Xi-drakes stayed managed to have an elder Xi-Drake, that had been half asleep relieve itself on him.
When Daks shouted his surprise and began firing arrows around the corner. Jay Zin took his cue to join the fray.
I think it's my turn to take point.
He activates his light shield, hoists up the new shield he found and heads down the hallway spear in hand. <Light Shield is active - raises your armor by 8 for the next 5 minutes as long as you are in a dim or well-lit area.>
Azzuretta will continue dining on her repast as the humans plan the next move....
Azzuretta enjoyed the taste of this new creature. She was immersed in her food until the sharp concern of Daks suddenly impressed a sense of urgency on the drake. Without a second thought, she flapped her wings and flew down the hallway.
Mechanus
Seeing Daks move suddenly into action at the end of the hall Mechanus made his way to the end of the hall with his new companions, wondering what new trouble would present itself. As he turned the corner he saw why his companion was so concerned. The guards had managed to overwhelm two rebels in the courtyard and to take their Glow compound. These guards had already applied the solution and were keen to spread the boon to their friends upstairs.
Action 2
Daks
Daks Action2 Pierce: 1d20 ⇒ 10
Daks’ second arrow shot flew from his bow towards the next guard in row. The shaft pierced the man’s armor, embedding deep in his shoulder. <Guard6 takes 5 damage>
Breona
At the end of the corridor she stopped along with her companions, assessing the new situation. Oh no. They have the paint. There went their advantage.
It was clear that the paint must not be brought deeper into the compound, or they would have a great numbers of foes against them, no longer sluggish in movement compared to them. This must not be.
She helped stopping the other runner, she might as well succeed here. Crossbow locked and loaded, she fired a shot at the guard closest to the stairs.
Pierce: 1d20 ⇒ 4
Just before she pulled the trigger, she heard the 'thump' in her mind again. That terrible sound, the bolt between the guard's shoulder blade, killing him. He probably went to work with his lunchbox, expecting another boring day guarding a rich merchant, and instead got a bolt to the back, killed by a rebel without a cause of her own.
Her hand shook. Her bolt did not hit her intended target. Up to her companions to save the day.
Jay Zin advances 10 feet tossing his spear at the guard closest the stairs and draws the other spear. pierce(5 dmg): 1d20 ⇒ 20
Addressing the room of guards he says...
Bring it boys
Jay Zin’s throw pierced the guard’s abdomen, pinning him against the wooden stair balustrade so that in death he merely fell limp to the side, looking grotesque in his posture. As Jay Zin called out his challenge, the remaining guards slowly adjusted their vision from their slain companion to his killer. Jay Zin saw vengeance and fear in their eyes. <Major Effect> Remaining guards are consumed by the desire to avenge their slain comrade against Jay Zin, they suffer a penalty to any action other than attacking Jay.
Basai
The group hurried down the corridor to a find an array of guards, all glowing. Basai rumbled unhappily, spotting the running guard but knew shi was too slow to cut him off and instead stepped up behind Jay as his spear cut through one of the guards as if it were nothing. Impressed, Basai rumbled hir approval then shifted into a defensive stance to back up Jay.
Move 10ft. Guarding (Protecting Jay Zin from attack)
Asset to all defense tasks, Asset to Speed-Based tasks against NPCs getting by or attacking Jay while guarding to prevent that action.
Mechanus
The paint!
Mechanus mind whirred so loud that he knew people could hear it. It didn't matter. Their advantage would be lost if that paint got distributed.
His lens put a bullseye on that can of paint and Mechanus took a moment to line up the shot as the tin fell from its arc. His hand vibrated with energy and it became painful to not let it gush out. But he waited for just a moment longer...
His shot hit dead on, virtually exploding the tin of paint in midair. The paint solution sprayed out from the impact, sprinkling everyone in the room with a mist of glowing specks. Mechanus almost wanted to jump up and down.
Mechanus Onslaught: 1d20 ⇒ 16
Azzure perched atop the body of the guard impaled by Jay’s spear, shrieking violently at the remaining guards. Prepared to attack should any approach her perch or the steps.
The remaining guards, shocked by the swiftness with which their two companions were killed and the sudden looming drake near the stairwell, and furious with Jay Zin for his boast, sought out the most direct ways possible to enact their vengeance on him. Three spent their round charging Jay with abandon, while the one furthest away found his approach blocked by the slave Diruk. He shouted “Out of my way diruk scum!” and made to attack Basai. The Diruk was prepared for the attack, and easily deflected the blow of the guard and answered with a repost of hir own.
