Backstory:
The story starts on a small island named Philea, placed somewhere in the Grand Line. It was a small yet beautiful place to live, filled with huge flower fields, green grass, riffs on which the ocean would shatter and a far-reaching bright blue sky. Not many people would live there, only about 10.000 citizens, who life in small houses, which were placed all over Philea. One of those citizens was the 12year old Joen Akane.
Akane lived there toghter with her belofed parents. Sure they argued a lot, but in the end they would always be on her side. Her mother Joen Laika, worked as a waitress at a small restaurant near the ocean, which Akane loved being at, while her father Joen Thompsen had a job as a builder. They didn´t have a lot of money, but enough to give their doughter any futur she wanted. Akane however never even thought of herself living a lawful live with a wellpaid job. She hated the idea of being bounded to something, never experiencing true freedom. No she wanted to go out on the sea and live as a pirate. In her eyes, pirates where the freest persons out there, sure the gouvernment would chase them and they would live in danger, but that didn´t matter to her. For her everything would be better than blindly obeying a law, people she doesn´t know anything about were making.
Her whole life, she was rebelling against highers, whether they would be teachers, police officers or just elders, she never cared, the only people she respected, are the ones who had earned it. Naturally a mindset such as this, would course her a lot of trouble and soon she became the girl almost everyone avoided or loughed at, but still her family would always got her back, especially her mother wanted her to make her own decissions.
The only friend, as far as you can count friend was a girl named Mika. The two of them knew eachother since they were five. It was a mystery why she would even hang out with her, she could be friends with everyone and both of them knew it. The probabbly only reason was, that she knew Akane was dependet on her, at least back than.
Mika would always toy with her and she would just let it happened. She would cry in her corner thinking, that this time she wouldn´t come back to her, but she always did. The only thing she needed to hear for this would be a “sorry”. Even though deep down she would know that she would only get hurt again, she was still her best friend, even when she wouldn´t get the same feelings this in return.
This would go on for years, but Akane would still be loyal to her, giving her more and more chances, till suddenly things would start changing. Mika would get into fights with the poeple she would hang out with. They would only hold for a few days each, but one could clearly see how those fights would start to change her. She would be the one, who would be depressed, not knowing what to do. Akane would give her best to cheer her up, because she hated to seeing her unhappy. Mika would never really understood why she was on her side, even going to those people telling them wrong, after all the times she hurt her, she was still fighting for her.
It was that time she started to change. Each day, Mika started to get closer and closer to Akane, slowly starting to move away from her previouse friends. The two of them would do more things together like discovering new places, going on “adventures” or just lieing on the cliffs, looking towards the endless sky, while dreaming about going out on sea.
It might have taken a while, but as they grew older, they became iseparable. With 15, they would basicly do everything for eachother. Now both of them would be outsiders, rebells and hired, but they still would be happy, they knew as long as they would be together, nothing could be so bad and whatever happens, in a few years they would be as far away from this insal as possibe anyway.
Sadly doing so would turn aout to be more difficult than in first seemed. While Akanes parents would give her all the freedom they could possibly give her, Mikas would make sure, that she would turn out exactly the way they imagined and that deffenetly didn´t included her being an outlaw.
They often tried to provent them from seeing eachother, saying Akane would be a bad influence for their doughter ( what she probbably was ), they always found a way to get passed them. They had thousends of planes how to run away once they´d be old enought and would never have to deal with them again. Their controll of Mika would reach from small things, like going out after dawn to major stuff, like what career she had to take. Thats why Akane was so determined to get her out from them. At first she hoped, that they would leave her alone eventuelly and let her live her life, but with every request they turned down and every time they forced Mika to stay away from her, Akanes hope slowly started to die.
One day it all escalated. Akane and Mika, now beeing 17 years old, had started a fight with a well respected elder of the town. For them the case was clear: Theire doughter has to finally leave Philea, that would be the only way for her to still become the good doughter they wanted her to be. Of course they never give Akane or Mika the opportunity to justify themself or tell their version of the story. Akane, still hoping they might listen, tried as hard as she could to convince them that they only acted out of reflex, they never planed to do anything, that he baisicly forced them do do something and that he´s just lieing, while Mika already knew, that they would never listen.
The man would call Mika useless scum, just because she was around Akane. That she will never make it to something aslong as she would be around her. She got mad and yelled at him, that he doesn´t have any right to decide that and that he doesn´t know anything. The man feeled disrespected and threatened to hurt her if she would say another word. Worried aboud her friend, Akane punshed him in the face, shouting to not dare to touch her. She was pretty strong and managed to land a good hit. Right after that moment, she instantly knew what she did and that there would be consequences, but at least Mika was unharmed.
Mikas parents decided to look her in her room, till they would shift her off Philea. The same same night, Akane decided to break her out. She knew that that would mean that they would have to leave the island, but that would be okey since they were going to leave on day ore another anyway. She felt sorry for her parents. Akane was sure that they would understand, they had proven often that they would alway be on her side, but that didn´t mean that they wouldn´t worrie or be sad.
It seemed like storm would be coming out, but that did´t matter to her, Mika was the only thing that would matter. She threw the biggest stone she could find against her window, which instantly shattered. After that she would start to climed up till she reached her. Akane told her about leaving and how they could use the old fishingboat of her father. Even thought Mika was skeptical and convinced that they would catch them eventually, she came with her.
They ran towards the beach where the small boat they would use was located. It already started to rain a bit, but they didn´t even noticed. They jumped on the boat and started paddeling. The two of them didn´t even know where they would going, the next island, which was a larger one that Philea with the name Santarra, was several miles away and the storm would getting stronger.
Waves would get higher and seawather splashed into their faces. It was hard to see anything and the two could barely understand eachother. Both of them were pretty scared, but other than Mika, Akane didn´t shown hoping to calm her down at least a little bit. She felt responisble for what happened, thats why she couldn´t even flinched for a second. She had to be strong, telling herself that they will make, even if she knew that the odds weren´t in their favor.
The storm would get worser and worser as time would progress and it would almost be impossible to controll the boot. Eventually it slipped over and both of the girls fall into the waves, stuggeling to keep themself from drowning, it was a fight they simply coulnd´t win. Akane shouted at Mika that she had to keep persever, but she simply couldn´t. The pressure of the storm was simply to big Mika and it pulled her under wather. Akane panicked and dove afterwards her. The saltwater burned in her eyes and she almost couln´t hold her breath. She came up again and yelled for help. She tried once again to get her up, fighting against the water to save her friend. Her lungs got filled with water, it hurted so much. The last thing she remembered was the powerless feeling she had and then it all started to fade away as she lost consciousness.
When she woke up, she found herself in a small room, covered in bandages. She could baraly move and had her worst headache, when the door opened and a midage man entered. He asked Akane what happened, about her name and how she felt. Akane could only hear a blurred noise, hearing only a few words. She tried hard to remember what happened, till it finally hit her...Mika. She immediately started to panicly asked him about her, but the now shocked and confused man just starred at her and began to tell her what happened.
He told her, that he and his son were fishing. A storm came up and so they headed back to Imbert, a small fisher town on Santarra, when they would hear a scream. He saw a upset boat and her body and immediately tried to save her. He said that he thought, that she was the only one on the boat and that it was already hard to only save her with those hugh waves. She was unconscious, but her heart was beating. They didn´t know her and therefore decieded to cure her at theire home three days ago and that his name was Charlos
“No”, that was the only word Akane could think of in that moment. She broke down, repeating this word over and over again. Charlos could imagine what happened. He tried to calm her down, but it wouldn´t work. He said that whoever she was thinking of, might be fine, eventhough both knew, that this wasn´t the case.
With tears in her eyes, Akane asked him, if she could have a while for herself and that she would leave if he wished, but Charlos was fine with that. She just sat on her bad till night, not abel to do anything. Her head was compleatly emptie. She wished that she could feel anything, anything but this. That horrible feeling she couldn´t eve describe. All of the sudden she head a voice telling to know that feeling. The voice came from a young man, not much older than her who know entered the room. He said his name was Leon and that he was Charloses son while sitting down next to her.
Leon told her that two years they lived in a different house nearer to the central of Imbert. One they a fire erupted and his mother and sister couldn´t make it out in time. He said that they moved nearer the ocean since they couln´t handel living in that place anymore. He felt the same as her, but toghether with his father, he got his will back. Leon asked her where she´s from and if she has any familie. Akane just looked at him for a good while. She didn´t want do annoy the ones who saved her and took care of her with her additude. Slowly she start talking. Her voice was quiet and she tried as hard as she could not to cry. She said that she has a familie on Philea she loves, but that she didn´t want to go back there. She thanked him, stood up and tried to leave, since she felt like they did enough for her already, but he just grabbed her arm and told her that she could stay, if shes willing to help that is. He meaned that they could always need a helping hand and she didn´t has anywhere to go anyway. Akane wasn´t sure what to response, but he was right, she really had no idea where she could go now, so she agreed to stay for a while, till she would know what to do.
A few weeks passed and Akane got used to the life in Imbert. It wasn´t like the town she was used to life in. I was quite peacefull near the ocean, but as further you get into the town, the more bandits, pirates and other outlaws you would finde. They would mostly be drinking in bars, attacking weaker people and would do anything for money. Akane did´t really minde them, or cared about the stuff they did. Sometimes she would even join them. Her fighting knowlage was good enough to keep her save.
It was about that time when rumors spread that some of those criminals got their hands on a Devil Fruit. Akane heard about them, but never seen one, or someone using one. Apparently you gain superhuman powers if you eat one, but will never be abel to swim again. For Akane not beeing abel to swim wouln´t really matter. Since that night, she couln´t get in the water anyway. Still not being abel to swim would be a big drawback. She also heard, that you could sell one for huge ton of Beli. Whether she wanted to eat it or not, she could still earn the money, if she could get her hands on it.
Akane thought, that if she might be abel to steal it, since those who have it, most likely are some drunken dumbasses. She tried to get a bit more of information, so she went around Imbert, asking the people about it. Charlos and Leon told her not to do something recless, but she didn´t really listen. The others she asked told her the same, but were abel to give her information about the location of the Devil Friut. The ones who have it in their posession, are apparently some mid-tier pirates. She could finde them in a bar called “sanke cave “ in the central of the town.
She went there at dusk. “The snake cave” was a dump, with drunken all over the place, giving there comments about her, since most young women wouldn´t dare to go there, but Akane would just he casually beat anyone up who dared to annoy her.
She went to a weaker looking crewmate of them, asking them where they would keep the Devil Fruit. He just laughed at her, but he was drunken enough to tell her, that it was keept in a small box near the captian and that he would chop her up if she would just dare to go near it. “Sure” Akane responsed as she bought him another drink while smiling, thinking that if all of them would be that stupid, gaining it in her possession wouln´t be that difficult.
Akane managed to spot their captian at the bar. He was a tall, muscular man, who is most likely in his mid thirties or forties and probbably the most drunken out of the bunch. His subordinate was right, right next to him was a small box. “The Devil Fruit must be inside of it”, Akane thought. She sat down next to him, trying to chat with him. He just looked at her with eyes, with a look that could tell you in what kind of condition he was. He just asked her what she wanted, with a deep scratched voice, giving a strong alcoholic smell out of his mouth.
Akanes asked him if the rumers about the Devil Fruit are true. With grumpy tone he replyed, that indeed they are. He even took the box and opened it infront of her. Inside of it was a fruit, with a wierd color, shape and swirls all over it. Akane till this point wasn´t one hundred percent convinced, that they were really in the possesion of one, but now things seemed to be clear. She heard somewhere, that they would look like this, but couldn´t really imagine how one would look like in close up.
She was wondering, why he would show it to her so openly, but his look told her, that he wanted to proof her that he really manage to get one. Akane also asked herselfe, what kind of power you would gain from it, and why non of them have eaten it. The most logical reason she could imagine, was that they wanted to sell it. Her plan was to wait till they, or more specificly their captian, would drunk themself senseless. So they wouldn´t notice her taking the fruit.
It took a good while, but after hours and hours of drinking, they slowly starting to get dizzy. Akane tried to get closer to the box, the Devil Fruit was in. She thought that if she could grab it unnoticed and leave in time, she might get away with it. She looked one more time to the captian, which had his head lying on the counter, barely keeping himself from falling. Convinced that he was taken out, she opened the box and took the Devil Fruit inside it out and put it into a bag, which she carried with her.
Trying not to gain any attention, Akane slowly started to walk towards the exit. She already was halfway there, when she suddenly heard the voice of the captian behind her, saying that he didn´t believed, that she was stupid enough to actually do this. He couldn´t even stand straight, but still looked at her with a death glow. He called out his men, to stand up and surround her. Most of them were to drunk to react, but those who were abel to execute his command, immediatly did so.
Akane knew, that it was impossible to fight all of them at once, maybe five, six or with luck even ten, but definitely not all of them, especially not their captian, which said with his drunken voice: “Just drop dead girl, you messed with the wrong guys”.
Akane could only thought of one possibility at the moment. If she would eat the Devil Fruit and gain the right ability, she might just make it aout, that is if she would figure out what she could do. She wasn´t sure if she really wanted to do this, but she didn´t have time to think much about it, since they cere about to attack her. “Okey I´m gonna do this now”, Akane thought when she fastly took the friut aout of the bag and took a good bite of it. I tasted disgusting, like it was an actually friut rotting for ages, she nearly had spat it out, but forced herself to swallow it down.
Everybody was shocked. Their captin yelled “ Damn! Kill her, than the fruit will reappear.Shocked aswell, Akane tried to focus on what power she received. According to what she heard, you would know what ability you gained, after you ate it, but she coulnd´t figure it out right away. One of the man pulled out his sword and tried to slash her. Out of relex, Akane lifted her right arm infront of the sword. Her arm instantly turned into a blade, which clashed with the sword. “ It´s the Supa Supa no Mi” she heard one of the man, which flinshed back, saying.” Supa Supa no Mi ? So I´m a Blade-human now. Than this shoulnd be so difficult”, Akane thought as she fought off her attacker.
Their swords coulnd´t hurt her now and hand to hand combat would only hurt themself. Akane started to attack everone who was still surrounding her, it was an easy win. At the end only the captian of them was left, with a furious, but desperatet face, only sayin “on day you gonna pay for this”.Akane just looked at him quietly responding: “ Just...Just don´t come after me” and left, leaving him behind.
It was the same day, Akane decided, that she is going to leave Imbert. She just wanted to travel around now and not being bound to one place. She settled, that she would say goodbye to Leon and Charlos, thanking them for saving her life and letting her stay at their home for the past cople of weeks.
Probably for the last time, Akane went to the littel fisherhouse near the ocean, wondering if she would return to this island one day. Arriving at the house, she explained the situation to Charlos and Leon. Leon was seemingly upset, not just about her eating a Devil Fruit and getting into this situation in the first place despite his warning, but also about her leaving. Charlos however instantly respected her choices. He told his son, that they didn´t have the right to decide about Akanes life and that everyone has to make their own decisions. Still a littel mad, Leon looked at her saying: “Just...Just try stay save please” and Akane responded with a “ Well I guesse I could indeed at least try for once”.
Charlos asked Akane to wait for a momant, as he went into the house. A cople of minutes later, he came back holding, what seemed to resemble a compass. “ A Log Pose ?” Akane questioned herself. She knew of them and that you need them if you want to navigate in the Grande Line, but they are also very expensive. Her family could never afford such a thing. Thinking back on this, Akane wondered, just what the hell she was actually in her mind, when she tried to leave Philea. She probably would have planned the imprtant things later out, when she would have to face them.
Charlos put the Log Pose in her hand, telling her that she would need this, if she indeed intended to leave. He said, that she could have it, since she would have more use to it, than they. He also gave her a food supply, which seemed to hold for about a week and a vivre card, just in case she ever planed on comming back. He also offered her one of his fishingbots, saying that it maybe looks small, but would be save. Akane, although happy, first couldn´t take his offers. They already did much more, than she could ever repay them for, but Charlos insisted her to take it. He wouldn´t give in. He was just as stubborn as she was. Even Leon would tell her, to take the stuff, saying that he would have to worrie a little less, that she would get herself killed, if she did so.
Akane than simply had to just accept their offers, even if she still kind of bad for doing so. She would even fell kind of sad for leaving them, since they treated her just like family, even if she did nothing for that. A few tears flowed out of her eyes, as she smiled and gave them a last hug. Than she would load her stuff on the boat, which was offered to her. Like Charlos said, it really wasn´t that big, but she didn´t have any rights to complain. It still seamed, like it was robust, which is the thing that mattered the most to her.
Akane took a deep breath and set sail than. She waved Charlos and Leon, as she was doing so, till she wasn´t abel to see them anymore. Than she started to look on her Log Pose, which she wore on her left hand. Before she left, Charlos explained to her, how she had to navigate with it and that she had to be very careful with it, since the glass, which surrounds it, is easy to break.
From there on out, Akane would travel alone for a good while. For the next few years, she was just go from island to island, staying on them just as long as she wanted. In this years, she lifed from Bounty hunting. The most criminals she ran into, never were abel to give her much of a fight and if they actually managed to be a little stronger, than your averige fodder, than she still managed to beat them very easy. In those few years, Akane grew much stronger and gained more experience than she had before.
She would enjoy her life in freedom. She never really had much plans on what to do and would just take live as it came. She still would wonder, how the people on Philea and Imbert, the town on Santarra would be doing, especially her parents and Charlos and Leon. She would wonder, if they would think about her sometimes too, or if they had just forgot her with the time, but even though she missed them, she really couldn´t imagine herself staying at either of them.
Everytime she tried to think of herself, staying at one of those places, something just wouldn´t feel right. The ocean had just grown to much on her over the past cople of years, even if she wasn´t abel to be in it anymore. It was just the feeling of having the seabreez blowing into her face, while hearing the waves of the ocean and the seagulls over her, that would give her happiness, although she didn´t have her best friend to enjoy this feeling with her anymore.
Akane would just focus on moving forwards. That didn´t mean that she would forget what was in the past, but that she wouldn´t let it ruin what lies in the future. With this in mind, she kept sailing from island to island and with every person she would met, she would gain more and more knowledge. If she had learned one thing during her past, than it´s that no matter what life bringes you, you should always keep going and never give up and you might see a better future.
