Some things that I truly love

The mad laugh of my two-year-old

The way he presses the small sticky palms of his hands against my cheeks

His bare buttocks when he runs around naked

His delicate shoulders and frail neck, the dirty edges of his tiny fingernails, his upper lip that resembles mine

Being a mother for him

Newborn babies, the sweet smell on top of their head, the way their eyes wander, unable to focus yet

Babies, cubs, puppies, kittens, chicks, calfs, fawns ... you name it.

The soft, freckled skin on my husband’s shoulders

Overhearing him conversing in French on the phone with his old friends

The strange, creative and ever surprising mind of my autistic nephew

The way my 6-year-old niece has been celebrating her physicality every day of her life

Witnessing my step-children growing under my eyes, in our home

The privilege of being part of a large extended family

The kind of big sister my stepdaughter has been to my son since before he was born

The kind of person my baby sister grew up to be, how she is as a parent and a friend and the woman she is

The brazenness of some little girls

The way my father’s face light up when my toddler comes to hug his knees

Good books, fine literature, reading in bed

Art that touches the core of your being

The variety of old trees in our garden

Living surrounded by a garden, seeing trees from each of our windows

Atlantic Ocean, how it spreads across the continents

Tide, how the water ebbs and flows along the tidewater and low tide, covering vast areas of shore land and leaving it bare again

West Coast Ireland where the mountains meet the ocean

The way the dirt and vegetation smell on a really hot day, the way the odor enhances if you’re breathing deeper while running cross-country

Riding a bicycle in the middle of the street on a summer night

Yoghurt ice-cream before it melts too much

Really cold sugar-free pepsi cola

Rhubarb

Cursing hard after suddenly hurting yourself and how it really easies the blunt pain and the sense of stupidity of your own clumsiness

My hands, what they are able to do, how they caress and craft

How the text suddenly becomes clear and the letters have sharp outlines again when I put my new glasses on

Crispy newly changed bed sheets, the way they feel all over the bare parts of your body

Photography, the magical way photographs are imitating reality

Colours

Being proud of people and things that have nothing to do with your investment

When people pay attention to others

When people notice small things

Kindness of strangers

Compassion, forgiveness
