Emails, Daryl Slusher, assistant director for environmental affairs and conservation, Austin Water Utility, June 11-12, 2014

7:23 p.m.

This can be looked at as total water use or stored water use, but the “three years worth” quote applies either way. Greg was referring to total water use.

Total water use is what it sounds like, and includes both run of river and stored water used. Run of river is what entities have rights to use and they thus take it from the river. Stored water is water from the Highland Lakes which is released by LCRA at customer demand.

We are using the figures from LCRA’s annual water use summaries.

Greg’s statement stands up under both comparisons.

Total Water use

Austin total municipal use in 2011 was: 168,334 acre feet (AF).

Total interruptible, or agricultural, use in 2011 was: 529,580 AF

If you multiply Austin’s 2011 use times three, you get: 505,002 AF, or less than three times the agricultural use.

Another way to look at it would be to total Austin’s total use for 2011-13.

Austin total water use 2011-13

2011: 168,334

2012: 151,495

2013: 142,027

         461,856

Those three years combined also come out as less than the agricultural releases for 2011 of 529,580 AF.

Stored Water comparisons

On stored water, Austin used more stored water in 2011 than in most years, but still the three times figure applies, actually four.

Austin stored water use in 2011: 106,622 AF

Interruptible Stored Water use in 2011: 433,251 (This is the number you sent this morning that I said was accurate, but on which I said I would provide more context)

Austin’s stored water use for 2011 will actually divide four times into interruptible/agriculture’s use that year.
